Great idea for a group. Thank you
I don't really have anything to say here, yet. Just thanks

(17,796 posts)Cool! Not my group. Just saw it and thought I would subscribe and say hi. HI!
Thanks for the group!

marym625
(17,997 posts)You don't need a separate group. There is this group here.
Or in possible Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy speak, there's here a group that works well getting their message out.

(17,796 posts)because we were working poor.
Maybe we should form an auxiliary unit.

(1,937 posts)but, i'd much more like to have you here
give your perspective, get our perspective
share ideas
i posted the history of this group above, it pretty much reads as a manual for how to do a new group
contact admins in 'ask the administrators'
then get people interested
then show admins you have people interested
then hide so no one knows who did it (sorry guys, i HAD to sleep before posting, i was so tired i was rude)
then wake up and see that the idea you had hopes for has taken off

(5,279 posts)Have to repetitively account for every dollar that just happens to fall my way to receive any help.
Shop at goodwill for clothes.
Know the location of every Dollar Store and Dollar General in 50 miles.
Get to go to a restaurant 1 time a month.
The only thing I currently have more of is time to reflect on the hidden joys of poverty rather than doing my next task. I look for a job I can do, but at 36% lung capacity it has proven elusive.

(1,937 posts)I'm glad you like it.
I posted the history (all 2-4 days of it) of this group.
Really all I did was see a 'gap' between Frugal/energy efficient which to me always had the feel of a 'lifestyle choice' and working poor as a group, also every time i see a working poor post, it seems i instantly see a suggestion from someone who hasn't 'walked the walk'
'eat rice and beans'!
'get another job'
blah blah blah
anyway, welcome all, for now i've applied to admins to be 'main host'
In the future i hoped we could have rotating elected hosts or similar
have fun all!

(1,937 posts)I've posted the history (for those who are masochistic) of the group
also some ideas and thoughts in a pinned post
shortly if we grow like we have (20 subs in less than 24 hours)
my idea is volunteer + vote on the volunteers and keep rotating them on a 'x time' basis
for now at least
and thanks again for helping me out and being supportive

(6,409 posts)1. The working poor are, above all, WORKING. They are not on welfare, freeloaders, leeches, etc. They have jobs, earn money, pay taxes, etc.
2. Tax burden issues. We all know about Mitt Romney and his 47 percent remark. What are the tax burdens of a family who could be considered working poor? Sales tax hits them hard. What about other "taxes" that higher income people can avoid? Utility deposits? Banking charges?
3. How many free services do the working poor really get? We sometimes hear how poor people have it better than middle class citizens. Is this really true? Do the working poor qualify for all the "free stuff" the government supposedly doles out?
welcome
1/ yes, we are
2/
check cashing fees
living on crappier food leads to less health
living in worse areas doesn't allow growing good veggies
not being able to buy high quality items means they break faster
3/
as an immigrant i can answer that and remove a lot of immigrant 'hatred'
'any free service i get stands a chance of getting me kicked out or hitting my (now ex) wife (or the slight bond we put up)for money and getting me kicked out instantly
i have a laptop and a cellphone (laptop is 10 years old mac running linux) , cellphone is relatively upscale Galaxy note III
it was a gift from relatives abroad to let me skype them
what i get from the gov? $0
i could potentially go for some supports but they would all affect immigration/green card status
and i'm making do, so no!

Yes, my son works full time now (finally), at the most hated place in the world: Wal Mart. It's a job, pays decently, and he gets some benefits.
2. Tax burden issues. We all know about Mitt Romney and his 47 percent remark. What are the tax burdens of a family who could be considered working poor? Sales tax hits them hard. What about other "taxes" that higher income people can avoid? Utility deposits? Banking charges?
Sales tax can be bad, especially when the state seems to forget that an extra percent or so doesn't hurt the richer citizens, but makes it really hard for the rest of us to squeeze out enough for food, clothes, home/car repair items, and so on.
It was always hard to come up with deposits for things. That's why I was determined not to move around a lot, like we did when I was a kid. Getting your utilities cut off because you couldn't pay them hurts too. They want extra money to get stuff back on, on top of what you owe.
3. How many free services do the working poor really get? We sometimes hear how poor people have it better than middle class citizens. Is this really true? Do the working poor qualify for all the "free stuff" the government supposedly doles out?
There isn't much to get. Every extra penny you earn either cuts benefits, or knocks you off the lists completely, even though it's not enough to make up for what you lose.

(74 posts)I would add all the people working LESS than 40 hrs because the job keeps their hours down.

(1,937 posts)and for those of us doing more than 40h per week we still don't get what we need

(4,879 posts)I'm a home healthcare attendant. My client is allowed 30 hours a week (Medicaid) and not one second more.
I often work more than that, but can't charge for it. We recently switched to an EVV (electronic visitation verification) time system. One day I couldn't get to the clicker to timeout at the exact time scheduled (helping patient on toilet). I got a nasty letter with my next paycheck. Evidently that extra $1.32 was going to collapse the system. LOL.

(74 posts)as well as costing the state far less than residential care or nursing home care.
I salute you. You are doing far more of importance than every billionaire in the country.
