Bernie Bros warn of ‘massive exodus’ if Democrats nominate Joe Biden

The Bernie Bros are vowing revenge.

“We will never – NEVER boost or support Joe Biden or defend his abysmal record and terrible policy positions,” Henry Williams, executive director of The Gravel Institute, told The Post. “We will tell people, as we always have, to vote their conscience and to make decisions based on the interests of all the world’s oppressed people … I do expect a massive exodus from the Democratic Party.” Williams, along with David Oks and Henry Magowan, are the driving forces behind the brief presidential campaign of Mike Gravel, an 89-year-old former Alaska senator who left the race in August. The trio then became enthusiastic Bernie Bros.

The grumbling from Sanders die-hards is no idle threat. A whopping 12% of them voted for Trump in 2016, according to an analysis by Cooperative Congressional Election Study. That added up to roughly 216,000 voters in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, exit polls showed. Trump’s combined margin of victory in those states was 77,744.

<snip>

After sweeping to victories in the early states, many believed Sanders was on a glide path to the Democratic nomination. The momentum was halted by Biden after a crushing victory in South Carolina and strong showings on Super Tuesday. Former establishment rivals like Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg and Mike Bloomberg quickly consolidated around the former vice president. Now, far behind in the delegate math, it’s Sanders who finds his campaign on life-support.

“I think staying in the race is the responsible thing to do,” Bhaskar Sunkara, founder and editor of the socialist magazine Jacobin told The Post. “He needs to challenge Biden on certain aspects of his rhetoric. He needs to accumulate clout and delegates to shape the Democratic platform and pressure the Biden campaign into adopting a more popular economic platform.”

Sunkara says he too has no plans to vote for Biden.

The thing to keep in mind is that lots of folks will vote for Trump in the fall for lots of different reasons, just about all of which have been discussed at length here at the DU. Just because some voters support Sanders but then prefer Trump over Biden should be no surprise - there are all kinds of people out there. Fortunately, their numbers will probably be insufficient to make much of a difference.

There is a subset of Sanders supporters who were never going to vote for anyone other than Sanders.

There's really nothing we can do about them, so we should focus on those we can.

If they don't understand the threat that another four years of Trump represents and would rather throw tantrums and stay home, they don't care about anything Sanders stands for.

by a large margin.

We weren't able to get her election through the electoral college, not because of these creeps, a mercifully small minority of wannabe rioters. It was because of the many others who didn't vote, or voted third party or Republican, because people like Sanders and Trump lied to them that Democrats were corrupt and they had no choices worth voting for. Except Sanders, of course, but the evil Democrats had stolen the election from him.

I'd like to see people stop gratifying these creeps by imagining they have an importance and place in our election they don't at all. As we know, they're not us and they never will be. Furthermore, we wouldn't want them under any circumstances -- just look at how they behave following Sanders. If this rabble came to our neighborhoods trying to cause trouble the way they do on social media, we'd call the police on them.

Lookit... for the same amount of effort spent trying to console and flatter ONE "bro" and convince him/her to support the party (and with no guaranteed results come election day), we could instead spend the SAME amount of effort with NORMAL "get out the vote" efforts... and normal "grow the party" registration efforts. For that SAME effort trying to "save" one bro... we could instead bring dozens or hundreds of new voters to the party and into the process.

So... fuck 'em. Let 'em go. We don't have time for that emoprog bullshit. Welcome to the real world... it's time for them to grow up. Trying to blackmail the party with threats of "leaving it blank" or voting for Trump, etc etc... that doesn't work with me. I don't care. Do it.

If someone REALLY his hell-bent on being like Sarandon, or Krystal Ball, or Nina Turner... or anyone else who gleefully votes AGAINST the Demcorat... that's just one more idiot that I don't have to worry about. There are plenty more rational and intelligent and reasonable voters (or potential voters) who can take their place.

Trump maximized the "hate" vote. People that hate Hillary or immigrants or the idea of paying taxes. Those people will most likely stay with Trump.

Many people that would have voted for Hillary didn't vote, because they saw Trump as such a joke that it was inconceivable that he would beat Hillary. Their assumption was their vote would not be needed.

Like I wrote, I expect Trump to maximize the hate vote, but I believe that won't help him because of the flood of voters that want him out of office, those voters will not assume this time, they will surely vote. We saw that in Virginia, where some seats were lost in 2017 because people didn't vote, those people showed up in waves in 2018 and 2019 and changed the face of Virginia politics.

And just like the guys in this article, they are fking idiots. They talk about voting your conscience and for your own interests...when the alternative is Trump whose policies are not only incomparably farther away than those of any Dem, he also attacks the accomplishments and improvements of former Dem administrations. They get mad about Biden only building on Obamacare despite his intention that everyone will be insured one day while Trump is trying to destroy it, taking away the coverage for so many.
How ignorant and selfish do you have to be to fight the person that agrees with you on many issues while happily seeing Trump getting reelected so that he can get 2 or 3 more SC judges.

Part of the reason for the long lasting divisions in 2016 was the fact that BS hung on so long after the 'writing was on the wall'.

are starting to remind me of Benito Mussolini.

He started off politics as a diehard left-wing socialist but couldn't make any headway and got himself expelled from the party so he did a total 180 and ended up as a full-blown right-wing fascist. Had much more success then...right up until the time his fellow Italian citizens shot him and hung him upside down for all to see and have themselves a good ol' time throwing stones at his corpse.

Gonna start calling these diehard Bernie Bros the Mussolini Minions.

Biden needs to respect Bernie, his supporters, the issues and do what he can to unite them with the core of the party. But these people aren't going to ever join this campaign. Focus on what can succeed.

They have a candidate who has a ceiling of 35% and they want to threaten the party if Bernie isn't given the nomination? Clearly these idiots are not really invested in winning. They just want to fight with the "establishment". There's no appeasing this segment of Bernie's campaign and I don't think we should bend over backwards to try. They will never negotiate in good faith.

and that his policies in general are far superior to Biden's. In a binary contest - and in practice it is absolutely binary, because only one of two candidates can win - this is the only rational conclusion one can reach, which leads me to the overwhelming certainty that this was never really about Sanders' policy offerings, but a cult of personality. The desire to feel part of a particular group or “movement”.

chaos in the Democratic party. There are a lot of undercover Trump supporters out there. Folks who like the tax cuts but don't want to be associated with the Trump stupidity nor with other Trump supporters.

So, you say you're with Bernie to gain clout with his "cool" supporters while damaging the Democratic party.
