(2,042 posts)I cant think of anything Im less interested in right now than the 2024 presidential race.
But since Im here I guess Ill play along. If Trump wins itll be a cast of thousands in both parties. Too hard to project what it would look like if Biden won and didnt want to run for a second term. Lot of variables.

(10,541 posts)after he is defeated, here is my best guess:
Biden will be the nominee. He will not seek a second term. His VP will be Tammy Duckworth. She will be the nominee in 2024.
If Trump can somehow win re-election, or steal the election like he did last time, then I am guessing Pete Buttigieg will be the nominee in 2024.

(17,868 posts)If Trump somehow beats Biden, you would really have to go pretty far left in 2024. There is no way Democrats can nominate a moderate three times in a row. It would have to be a progressive's turn, it's only fair.
I made a post recently that Bernie and Biden supporters should come to a deal. Every Bernie supporter works hard for Biden this vote, and votes for Joe. No excuses! However, if Biden loses, we must go left in 2024, it's worth a try. Deal?

(10,541 posts)2016 didn't prove anything. The FBI and James Comey obliterated our candidate's reputation with their bogus investigation into a ridiculous scandal about nothing. Hillary was more trusted on managing the economy and handling public policy, although the media likes to pretend otherwise.
I am not going to change my assessment of what wins an election if William Barr goes after the Democratic nominee and affects the outcome of the race. As it is, the only reason Trump has a shot at winning is because some people give him credit for Obama's success and managing the economy.

(46,227 posts)If you compare his platform and programme proposals to any previous nominee before him going back decades upon decades, other than Bernie, he is far more progressive. Just because he doesn't shoot off the deep end of Sanderite fevered dreams does not, I repeat does NOT make him or most of the last 20 or so who were left, some some of centre left (I have even saw him called a crypto Republican ffs!, including on here, and that earned a poof, rightly so) to centre right sell-out. AT ALL. That is pure and unadulterated bollocks.
It is pure gaslighting to say he is some middle of the roader. I defy you to point to significant parts of his agenda that were 'moderate' when viewed in a historical context, especially compared to anything in the last 75 years before him (not counting Sanders).
Just because a candidate disagreed with Bernie on certain big ticket items does NOT automatically make them a moderate or some sort of sell-out, or a corporate hack, or Rethug-lite, or ANY of the other bullshit smears that came flying in from the Sanders campaign and their social media attack dogs against any other candidate (WARREN included!) not named Sanders.

(166 posts)I think Biden will be fine. COVID-19 not withstanding, 80 is the new 70. I expect after that it will be Kamala Harris vs Father Pence or Rafael Cruz. Theyll find out that Nikki is Mark Sanfords Argentine lover and shell be out.
Maybe Trump has screwed up the GOP so bad theyll try and recreate the magic and nominate Palin.

Haley (Nimrata "Nikki" Haley, née Randhawa) is Indian American with no ties whatsoever to Argentina, and Sanford's Argentine GF was Maria Belen Chapur.
'Luv Gov' Sanford spotted with Argentine girlfriend
https://www.politico.com/story/2015/06/mark-sanford-maria-belen-chapur-relationship-119143
When Rep. Mark Sanford posted a rambling, 2,000-word announcement of his breakup with María Belén Chapur on his Facebook page last September, we thought wed seen the last of the nutty antics of those two lovebirdsbut hold onto your hats because it appears the couple is giving their union one more go. Chapur was spotted hanging out with Sanford and members of his staff at last weeks annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park. Seated near the first base line, a casually dressed Sanford, who generously passed out cans of beer to those around him, was accompanied by Chapur, looking tanned in a sleeveless black top. It was the striking Argentinian brunettes 2009 affair with the then-married governor of South Carolina that gave whole new meaning to the term hiking the Appalachian Trail.
In 2012, the couple were engaged, and in 2013 Sanford revived his political career by being elected to Congress in a special election. But in September 2014, Sanford announced he had broken things off with his mistress-cum-fiancée, citing the stress of his ongoing divorce negotiations with ex-wife Jenny Sanford. In an interview with the New York Times just days after the breakup, Chapur said it was she who ended the relationship after Sanford wouldnt set a wedding date, indicating she felt like a pawn in Sanfords political comeback; with the election over, she suggested that he no longer needed a fiancée. Chapur added she didnt know Sanford was going to spill the beans on Facebook until she learned it from media reports. The two went their separate ways, with Chapur going back to Argentina and Sanford remaining in D.C. and South Carolina.

(166 posts)That wasnt intended about race. I was joking about the rumors going around about Haley being involved with a South Carolina pol back around the time Sanford got in trouble.
A second man is claiming to have had an affair with Nikki Haley, the married frontrunner to be the Republican candidate for South Carolina governor. Larry Merchant, a well-known lobbyist and political consultant, says he had a one-night stand with Haley, who has been fighting back allegations that she slept with a conservative blogger. (Haley is hoping to succeed Gov. Mark Sanford, who is infamous for his Argentinian affair.) Merchant says the political night of passion happened at a 2008 school-choice conference in Salt Lake City, when Haley was a state representative on the insurance subcommittee and he was the insurance industrys chief lobbyist. Haleys staff denies the allegation. She can deny it, Merchant says. Let the people decide. I know what happened, and my conscience is clear.

Plus he is 50 years older than me, and no amount of money (at least not what Trump could gin up, as I think he is nowhere near a billionaire when his debts owed are factored in) would persuade me to grandpa sex that pile of dogshit. £10-15 billion, then we might be able to talk, as then I could buy Chelsea from Abramovich and save the club long term.

(17,868 posts)He came in second last time. I expect him to plow through the Republican debates. He's better than the rest of the Republicans at debating.
If Trump wins, it depends who he beats:
If he beats Biden, Democrats will certainly go left in 2024, either Warren or even AOC (who will be 35). It won't be Bernie though. He'll be just too old.
If Trump beats Bernie, I'd say Corey Booker. He's moderate and awesome, and is a fantastic debater. The perfect candidate.

(10,285 posts)... Biden will serve one term. I hear people say some Dems desperately want the power/Presidency, but Biden decided not to run last time, and Hillary decided not to run this time; they are more sensible than power-hungry. Still, if he's healthy, Biden may decide to run again. I also think, health permitting, Bernie will run again. He has the "presidency bug" and so does Romney for the Republicans. Nicki, Ted and their usual cast of thousands will run, too...

And it will be a woman who is not in the spotlight now, but an emerging leader, probably in Congress (but it could be a governor).
If Biden wins, pretty much as above, but with more grooming of her. More support and encouragement.
