Democrat Biden tacks left, backs Warren bankruptcy plan with student loan relief

3 MIN READ
(Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden has endorsed former rival Elizabeth Warrens plan to reform consumer bankruptcy laws including allowing relief of student loan debt, incorporating proposals by the partys progressive wing into the moderate frontrunners campaign.
Ive endorsed Elizabeth Warrens bankruptcy proposal, which ... allows for student debt to be relieved in bankruptcy and provides for a whole range of other issues, Biden said in a digital town hall in Illinois on Friday.
Warren, a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, suspended her campaign March 5 after a poor showing in primaries that week. That left the more centrist Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, a democratic socialist, in the contest for the Democratic nomination to run against Republican President Donald Trump in November.
Bidens decision to endorse Warrens bankruptcy plan is significant, showing she and Sanders have moved the partys policy discussions to the left. It also would reverse portions of a strict bankruptcy law that Biden himself championed when he was a senator.

(831 posts)1) The fact that student loans can't currently be discharged in bankruptcy means that anyone can get a student loan. The unintended consequence of making student loans subject to bankruptcy rules means that lenders are going to start to apply normal lending rules - which means no loans for students who don't have parents or other co-signers with assets.
2) Joe Biden has had a resurgence by not alarming or annoying the centrists and moderates, not by appealing to the extreme left. He needs to understand that and continue to distance himself from the proposals of Warren and Sanders, not to embrace them.
