@JoeBiden
Across the country, middle and working class families are being squeezed by debt. This is a massive problem, and one that we need all of the best ideas to solve. That's why today, I'm adopting two plans from @BernieSanders and @ewarren to achieve this.

First: Bernie has put forward a plan that would make public colleges and universities free for families whose income is below $125,000. It's a good idea, and after consideration, I am proud to add it to my platform.

Second: Few people in the country understand how bankruptcy hurts working families more than Elizabeth Warren. Today, I am fully endorsing and adopting her bankruptcy plan, which she called "Fixing Our Bankruptcy System to Give People a Second Chance."

Gasbags who make grand claims and deny who's good on climate do it because they're comparatively (or completely) empty sacks on this suddenly politically useful subject and can't stand the comparison.

This turn reflects that Joe can listen to everyone and pivot as needed. Now we have to hold the House and take the Senate to make it all happen, and be ready again in two years to turn out record numbers of Democratic voters in 2022.

The Bernie or bust crowd won't come on board but we can win without that group. Biden has done a good job expanding his base of support among college educated White women, suburban women and blue collar Whites that Hillary couldn't win over in 2016.

a problem of getting it. He already adapted to some Warren and Sanders' plans, no need to alienate some voters we might need, by letting states do it for now?
The object is to be smart, vote to beat trump, get Joe in office to implement his plans, not be 1-issue voters.

(62,106 posts)"Two Scoops". I just meant to say you were making a state's right argument for pot legalization. Here in Texas ut gets worse than that - counties, cities, towns can opt dry or not regarding alcohol. In a state that allows me to order a drink and put it in front of my child, I think is eight years old or older.
Let the Feds decriminalize pot and then make all states regulate it. That would even get the SCOTUS involved if there problem with a state's laws.

(55,334 posts)Bernie's positions are extremely popular. Plus many of them are the right thing to do. The problem has never been his ideas, which poll after poll show the general public supports. The problem is his limited capacity of working well with others.
I still support 100% of Bernie's right to stay in the primaries. It does not hurt the party Noor impair party unity to have vigorous debates more than three months out from the nominating convention.
but Joe is right to start stealing Bernie's positions. That will unify the party as much as a vigorous endorsement from Sanders in July.

(10,823 posts)be the privilege that would be taking advantage of this. They are already starting at a higher level and the competition would be brutal for those with less. (1,089 posts)More arm-waving words. Let's see some numbers, Bernie.
I read recently that student debt is about $1.5 trillion. None of the experts know for sure how much wiping that out would really cost but it seems doable at first glance, especially since they're now talking about a possible TARP 2 to save the moneygrubbers on Wall Street costing $4 trillion or thereabouts to save their greedy asses again if the market tanks real bad. Haven't seen a single number yet on all the other stuff. Bet it would be a helluva lot more than wiping out student debt.

(1,089 posts)that Sanders supporters are now bitching about Joe "stealing" some of other people's ideas and helping to push them forward. Bernie does this all the time himself. He stole Truman's idea for a single payer healthcare plan he came up with circa 1947 and I don't hear none of Harry's supporters whining about it. Keep it up and all you guys will get is a big fat shit sandwich to munch on...even bigger and fatter than the one we've all been eating the last 3 years.

(3,678 posts)For one, it's generally understood that universal programs are more robust and cheaper to administer.
In addition to the added bureaucratic costs, it could generate other problems - some related to what you just wrote about - and create incentives to game the system. (Here's an economist writing about that: https://cepr.net/the-free-college-battle/ )
While I take Biden's announcement as a welcome development, I think a better answer for people concerned about giving the wealthy something they don't need is a more progressive tax code.

(1,089 posts)Income
Financially, Republicans fare better than either Democrats or Independents, and tend to identify themselves as such. Republican candidates gain a significantly higher percentage of votes from individuals with incomes over $50,000 per year, and the advantage increases along with the income level, to a height of 63 percent of individuals earning $200,000 or more a year supporting Republicans. This level is the direct inverse of individuals earning less than $15,000 a year, who support Democrats at 63 percent and Republicans at only 36 percent.
Republicans also express a much higher level of satisfaction with their personal financial situation than either Democrats or Independents. Before the U.S. economys downturn, an all-time high of 81 percent of Republicans expressed satisfaction with their personal financial situation. That number dropped to 61 percent in 2009, but it is still significantly higher than the corresponding 52 percent of Independents and 49 percent of Democrats. A much larger proportion of Republicans than Democrats also identify themselves as haves versus have-nots.
High earners vote Republican almost 2-to-1 than for Dems. Guess it's all them liberal movie stars and performers with a conscience who bring it down some...LOL.

(1,089 posts)https://www.vox.com/2019/6/11/18659986/voter-study-group-democrats-economics
The study, released Tuesday by the Democracy Funds Voter Study Group, was authored by Lee Drutman, Vanessa Williamson, and Felicia Wong.
They gauged support for a few different progressive economic policy ideas and then compared the views of low-income voters (with less than $40,000 per year in household income) to more comfortable ones (with more than $80,000 per year in household income). For Democrats, the more affluent voters were generally more left-wing probably because they are better-educated and thus generally more ideological but the difference is small.
For Republicans, by contrast, theres a huge fall-off in support as you go up the income ladder.
Bottomline is the higher income a Democrat has the more they are willing to support progressive economic policies that may end up costing them a few bucks...just the opposite of Republicans. In a nutshell, the richer a Gopper gets the greedier he gets. Here's another one that doesn't really cover party-affiliation vs income but has a lot of other great stuff to look at and get a little smarter...
