Please see this important announcement regarding tomorrows election. The Franklin County Board of Elections has worked tirelessly to keep voters and poll workers informed about voting and the rapidly changing public health situation, and we apologize for the confusion. https://t.co/nPp0vM1upd

(2,657 posts)No one is required to endanger their health. If I had a regular influenza bug on voting day, and I had not arranged for an absentee ballot or to vote by mail, I simply could choose not to vote. That has always been my right. Everyone has the right to choose not to vote if they think that it will make them sick. This line is nonsense:
"They mustn't be forced to choose between their health and exercising their constitutional rights"
Does anyone normally ever freak out because some people choose not to vote because they are sick? For some reason, Dewine does not want this primary to occur tomorrow, and I believe that it has little to do with coronavirus. This situation smells to high heaven.

Which is why I believed election was not cancelled (first post).
But DeWine is going to ignore the court and the election will be cancelled (second post with link).

(14,322 posts)The CDC has recommended no more that a gathering of 50 people, the primary would have much, much more than that, and that's a possible recipe for the spread of the virus.

(46,608 posts)There are lines, and way more than 50 people in there.
So they should be shut down using that logic. And then we all starve to death.
Everybody being dead will stop virus from spreading.

From a Republican Ohio House of Representatives member, reacting to the DeWine administration's decision to close polling places tomorrow for health reasons
We have a constitutional crisis now in Ohio. I will be fighting in the AM to keep our polling locations OPEN in the 83rd district with law enforcement, as the Ohio Department of Health can not shut down an election. #ConstitutionalCrisis

(1,846 posts)There just is not enough testing.
We have no idea the extent to which this virus has spread.
The primary is technically over any way due to Biden's lead in both delegate count and the polls.
I just think of those sweet older folks sitting there helping people as poll workers.
I'd hate to see a single one get sick because we don't have the patience to see Biden wipe the floor with Bernie again.

Also it's not just Biden and Bernie. There are several Congressional primaries on tomorrows ballot and those races also need to be decided if we're going to have a Congress next year.

(8,742 posts)What's to stop KGoP governors across the country from declaring a health emergency requiring them to close polling places?
What if they identify "hot zones" as being in predominantly blue districts, and close those while leaving red districts open?
This is the most worrisome news I've seen since Mango Mussolini was declared the winner of the Electoral College.
We are in deep and uncharted waters.
Edited to add: I have the same feeling in my gut, seeing this news, that I had when I heard that the Supreme Court had stopped the Florida recount in 2000.
God damn the Electoral College.

(1,242 posts)" That lawsuit was filed Monday evening by Judy Brockman and Jill Reardon. Both are over the age of 65 and considered vulnerable to the risks posed by COVID-19 coronavirus.
In an affidavit filed with the lawsuit, Reardon says she was recently treated for pancreatic cancer and suffers from a severe immune deficiency. She says if the primary election is held on March 17, she will have to forego her right to vote instead of potentially expose herself to COVID-19. "

(4,650 posts)I live in CT. All bars and restaurants are closed except for takeout service, schools are closed indefinitely, weve been told by the governor to work from home if we can and not travel unless its necessary. If the Ohio primary is held, it will a/ suppress turnout and b/ put the people who participate needlessly at risk. The obvious solution for the remaining primaries would be to do them by mail-in ballot but is there enough time to arrange that?
