So the primaries themselves can't be cancelled.

It may be that states move to a mail-in option, but I'm not sure how the laws work in each state to change it.

IDK what the DNC rules are on it, but most if not all of the states that scheduled their primaries for this late in the cycle have other elections scheduled the same day. The only reason to go this late in the cycle is to save money on holding a separate primary just for the presidential.

The delegates have to get assigned, no matter what.

Plus, there are down ballot races for voters to choose as well: Congressional and Senatorial candidates, state legislators, and so on.

There are a lot of state and local candidates on the ballots as well as referendums and local measures.

Sanders dropping out frees Biden to go after Trump and conserves Biden's cash for the GE.
