Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBiden wants a woman as his running mate. Val Demings could be the one.
If what happened on Super Tuesday is any indication of what will happen in Floridas primary, I think that were gonna be in really good shape, Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.) told me during an interview last week. She was right. Despite disruptions due to the coronavirus, Florida saw record turnout that powered the 40-point victory of former vice president Joe Biden, whom Demings endorsed.
Demings wouldnt engage in direct political talk when I asked her about Bidens remaining rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), especially given his comments about the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Demingss reticence was unsurprising since we were sitting in her Capitol Hill office, where such talk runs afoul of the rules. But she found a way to get her point across.
I certainly will not guess about what Sen. Sanders said or what he meant to say. But what I do know is that several people who live in a very diverse state were upset by those comments, Demings, a former police chief in Orlando, told me when I asked whether Sanderss praise for Castros literacy programs was damaging in the Sunshine State. Were in the middle of a race. Were going to let Floridians decide.

(147,606 posts)I do wonder, however, if her lack of name recognition nationwide might not be an issue. I don't know, but the time is short to make her a national figure, I think.

(8,407 posts)I'm saying you don't know how someone will perform when the spotlight is on, until it's on. Including on family members as well. Who would have thought that a Governor could be a complete dingbat, with a totally fucked up family? I would prefer someone who is already well known and vetted. And has more experience than being a police chief with a whopping 3 years in the House.

(48,833 posts)Most of us have never heard of her until the impeachment proceedings.
And even now, I would say that many Good Democrats would not know who she is.
And is being a chief of police of a medium size city good qualifications to be a heart beat from the president?
Remember, like it or not, there is a real possibility that Biden (and Sanders) may not be able to complete his term. We need someone who knows how Washington is working. Or, at least, has extensive executive experience.
