Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumState of the Race: Progressives debate Sanders's future
Progressives are debating what should come next for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), whose once-promising second presidential bid has been all but snuffed out by former Vice President Joe Biden.
Sanders is publicly giving the appearance of winding down his campaign after a string of blowout losses that has pushed Biden to a near-insurmountable lead in delegates.
The Vermont senator has pulled his digital campaign ads and scaled back his fundraising efforts. The coronavirus pandemic, meanwhile, has effectively pulled the candidates off the campaign trail completely.
Some progressives say the time has come for Sanders to throw in the towel so the nation can focus on addressing the health crisis and so Democrats can move on to the business of defeating President Trump in November.

I know so many of you are saying that we must now get behind @JoeBiden, but I swear to you that @BernieSanders has the right character, philosophy, work ethic, skills, and team to help our nation and the world confront the crisis we are in.
He was made for a moment like this.

(120,903 posts)which has been sorely damaged by the behavior of some of his campaign staff and supporters as well as by his general intransigence, would be to withdraw right now, throw his support behind Biden and act like he means it, no matter the magnitude of the bros' predictable hissy fits. He should urge his supporters to recognize that if Trump is re-elected there would not only be no Medicare for All but probably no Medicare for anybody, and however bad things seem now they would be exponentially worse in all respects. They should not even think about supporting a third-party candidate or staying home, no matter how bad their tender feels have been hurt by The Establishment. I don't know if Bernie is capable of doing that, considering how sulky he got after Hillary clinched the nomination. But I hope he's different this time.

(96,043 posts)Unfortunately, I don't think the man knows how to say "I was wrong." or "I apologize." Nor do I think he is capable of learning much. There is an extraordinary rigidity about the fellow.
"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

(19,312 posts)In 2016 I came out in support of Bernie Sanders. If anyone doubts that I'll post my ActBlue donations for all to see. As it became clear that Bernie sometimes talks from both sides of his mouth at once, and that Hillary was a better choice to face Donald Trump in 2016, my support - and money - went to Clinton. Again, my ActBlue donations bear this out.
This year I came out in support of Kamala Harris. After she dropped out I took a step back, remained undeclared for awhile, then jumped on the Biden bandwagon when it appeared he was the logical, and only, choice to defeat Donald Trump.
Sanders, and his supporters, should recognize that their chance for winning the White House in 2020 is over. It's now time to get out of the way, and either help Joe Biden get elected, or admit that they were only "democrats" of convenience and to never darken the Democratic party's door again. We could surely use their help in defeating Donald Trump, and we're willing to listen to - and adopt some of - their ideas into the Democratic platform. Their time to lead is over, so either follow, or get the hell out of the way until November 3rd.

(17,757 posts)He could find a way to bring his supporters to the defeat Trump campaign. If he doesn't he has no political future, at least as a Democrat. The mainstream will never forgive him if he doesn't do the right thing.

(43,049 posts)He's never gotten any of his grand plans into committee after oer 30 years, so his "backup plan' was to run for Prez and force it down our throats.
But, this is still a democracy, no matter how many death throes it's going through, and Bernie just plain lost.
Losers lick their wounds and find new allies for the next fight. If there is a next fight.
