Michelle Obama MUST accept the VP nomination!

I understand that she has indicated that she wishes not to run but this is a national emergency!!!! Truman didn't want to be VP either but Roosevelt pressured him into it because of the national need. Sometimes the best leaders are those who do not seek the spotlight! In addition I also propose that Biden appt Barack Obama as Sec State.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

As much as I respect Michelle Obama, she has never had any government experience besides as First Lady (she's never been elected to anything), and she'd probably be the first to admit she isn't qualified in that respect. We already have at least a half-dozen experienced, respected women who could fill that job brilliantly. Nobody should be pressuring her into taking a job she clearly doesn't want. Trying to draft someone who is clearly uninterested is really kind of an insult to the women who were actual candidates or who have served in other elected offices.

the VP is largely a symbolic post, so no insult is intended for any of the fine choices Biden otherwise has, In fact i have no expectation that this will come to be so i realize this post is half in jest. My reality is that i hope Biden picks Stacey Abrams, i think we will need her to combat voter suppression and I'm a fanboy, but my number one fantasy choice will always be MO

...especially when the president is 78-82 years old (as Biden will be over a 4 year term).

I really see no appeal in this, and don't know why people keep fantasizing about it. She has almost no relevant experience, we don't even really know what her policies/positions would look like (unless you're simply of the mind that "any Dem will do&quot , and she is not a rock star in favorability outside the Dem base (yougov says overall 57% favorable, 30% unfavorable, which is very good, but not game changing, and probably only even that high because she's not running for anything and not saying or doing anything controversial).

national politics is a terrible business on a personal level. if you're a crook; a sociopath; or a super-ambitious, egotistical, savior-wannabe, then politics is great. but for real people, it's a horrible line of work.

michelle is so real and down-to-earth and smart and sensible that she would be a refreshing change. but the job would chew her up and spit her out. or, more precisely, republicans and the right-wing press would. i think she knows damn well how hard it is on a president and their family, and wouldn't want to go through that again.

Roosevelt did not want Truman. He wanted James Byrnes, who had the title of assistant president, or William O Douglas, Justice of the Supreme Court. Party leaders wanted Truman and pressured Roosevelt to accept. He didn't and the vote went to the convention delegates. After three votes Truman got enough delegates to be selected. Roosevelt never had a significant conversation with Truman from the time they were elected until Roosevelt died. Truman knew nothing about WW II strategy and plans other than what he read in the paper.

Fri Mar 20, 2020, 09:48 PM
Mar 2020

The choice of VP during the FDR years was still controlled by the machines that ran the convention. FDR wanted Wallace off and personally preferred Justice William Douglas.

The machines moved against Wallace and a number of candidates were put up to compete on the convention floor and Truman was scheduled to nominate one.

Truman had garnered tremendous respect across the country for the Truman Committee and different key city leaders started to change to Truman.

FDR was asked his opinion and advised either Douglas or Truman would be OK. Had the convention wanted someone else FDR would have had to accept though everyone preferred consensus.

In any case FDR did not "pick" Truman.

you are correct, i was referencing this anecdote of the reluctant Truman:

"On Wednesday, Truman and the leaders gathered in Hannegan's suite in Blackstone Hotel. Hannegan called Roosevelt while Truman listened, and told him that Truman was a contrary Missouri mule. Roosevelt replied loudly, so everyone in the room could hear, "Well, tell him if he wants to break up the Democratic Party in the middle of a war, that's his responsibility," and slammed down the receiver. Truman was dumbstruck, but after a few moments replied, "Well, if that is the situation, I'll have to say yes. But why the hell didn't he tell me in the first place?" By another account he just said, "Jesus Christ." Before the call, Hannegan and Roosevelt had agreed what each one should say."

In the pre modern era the convention s had a lot more to do with the VP than now.

Hannegan was the guy who was promoting somebody else and warmed to Truman at the convention and engineered Truman's ascent.

FDR wanted William Douglas the most. Can you imagine what a disaster that would have been? And I love my fellow Washingtonian.

If recollection serves, the Truman Committee looked into waste in weapons procurement during the war.

Wallace went on to run as an independent in '48, his campaign dwindling to the point it was virtually an association of CPUSA fellow travelers. Several adults of my acquaintance when I was young told me they had meant to vote for him, right up to entering the booth, where they switched to casting a ballot for Mr. Truman. The presence of the Dixiecrat Thurmond concentrated the mind wonderfully for sensible folk on the left. That was a four-way race: nothing like it has ever been seen since.

"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."
