Sanders Calls for 'Unprecedented Legislative Response' to Coronavirus Crisis--Not Corporate Bailouts

Sen. Bernie Sanders is raising the alarm over the Senate economic stimulus bill being drawn up to combat the domestic effects of the global coronavirus pandemic, warning that the legislation is being unduly influenced by lobbyists and business interests—not the American people.

"Now is not the time to allow large corporations to take advantage of this horrific crisis by ripping off U.S. taxpayers and profiteering off of the pandemic," the Vermont senator said in a statement Sunday.

The $1 trillion stimulus bill is being drafted in the Senate and the chamber's leadership aims to vote on the legislation on Monday. Reportedly included in the bill are a number of provisions assisting industries affected by the fallout from the coronavirus outbreak—huge bailouts that Sanders said were too much to ask the American taxpayer for in a time of crisis.

According to Sanders:

Just in the last few days, we've seen numerous examples of lobbyists and their agents fighting for special favors: the airline industry is asking for $50 billion, the private space industry is asking for $5 billion, the hotel industry wants $150 billion, the National Association of Manufacturers wants $1.4 trillion, the International Council of Shopping Centers wants a guarantee of up to $1 trillion, Adidas wants to sneak in a long-sought provision allowing people to use pretax money to pay for gym memberships and fitness equipment—even when many gyms and retail stores are closed nationwide, and corporate pork producers are using the coronavirus to push Congress to expedite guest worker visas, even at a time when international travel and immigration is largely shut down.

It's the same bailout.

Pay the corporations directly the f****** executives will line their pockets and give the workers as little as possible.

Let the executives take the pay cuts, they're the 'captains of the ship', and they're the ones responsible for not having set aside funds for emergencies like this.

especially when they require a serious infrastructure like auto manufacturers and airlines.

It is the height of lunacy to think that by making existing corporations go under, new ones would pop-up like mushrooms.

This demonstrates that Bernie's policy is not rooted in any empathy for workers but is a reflection of his personal hatred of successful companies and rich people who start and manage them.

I see no reason not to bail out corporations with strings attached like Obama did -- loans at above market rates collateralized by a substantial stock in the companies. It will save millions of jobs for "working people" who Sanders seems to champion for.

My take was that the 'go work for other corporations' was not a serious suggestion but I could be wrong.

We COULD help the corporations ... but also the workers directly.

The most important thing in my view is that they're not helped for free ... they need to give up stock and these need to be LOANS that need to be paid back.

If corporations can't be responsible enough with their money and savings to survive major slowdowns such that the taxpayers have to bail them out, then maybe they are a flawed business model.

Us regular folks are expected to do just that ... on a LOT LESS.

Maybe there's really NOT enough money in these businesses to pay the top people hundreds of 1000's or millions/year.

Maybe they need to be taught that lesson the hard way.

Loans with strict conditions, and a receiver's oversight, would be an excellent way to handle the aim, combined with direct payments to people out of work or on short hours. The objection by business types to the latter makes little sense to me --- the money paid to people out of work or on short hours will wind up in their coffers anyway. People will spend it, and someone will profit every time they do, all along the line. 'Relief' programs don't subsidize people, they subsidize businesses people patronize with the funds 'relief' provides people.

"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. it's a natural occurrence of a capitalistic driven economy.

There will be new corporations that pop up driven by the profit motive, someone will need to create supply for the peoples' demand; if the government has propped up the people with the ability to dictate demand by paying them during this crisis.

However just helping marginal corporations stay afloat is too narrow a remedy for the malady, there simply won't be enough demand in allowing those businesses to flourish and millions to tens of millions of American will suffer greatly.

...say much positive about Biden, nor will Jacobin.

Even if he said nothing (which is FAR from the truth!) remember - he's a private citizen. He can't introduce anything in the Senate, he can't go to the floor of the Senate and debate with the republicans.

Why has the Sanders campaign and his supporters suddenly come up with this FALSE claim of "we haven't hear anything from Joe", "where's Joe", blah blah blah.

Did you miss this, among many other proposals and statements he's made since the last three primaries:

Washington (CNN)Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has tested positive for coronavirus, making him the third member of Congress and the first US senator to be diagnosed with Covid-19.

Perhaps the Senate should be working from home, I see no reason as to why they would be any more immune to the Corona Virus than any other business or institution.

I believe Bernie is doing what every conscientious American is doing reducing his and the public's' exposure to the corona virus.

The Senate knows what Bernie stands for what he supports and what he doesn't, they have telephones, Internet and all those wonderful features, if it came down to a vote, Bernie could be there in hours.

People care what he does, and he does nothing except strengthen the hand of the Republican party.

He is hardly leading on this, Professor Warren is as usual way ahead of him, and she is far from alone, you may be sure. She actually has allies, and people pay some attention to her.

Useless as teats on a boar hog....

Sun Mar 22, 2020, 01:04 PM

In legal terms, what we are going through is a “force majeure” - an occurrence beyond the control of either party in a contract. Businesses aren’t at risk of failure because of bad investments, embezzlement or corruption, but because the 21st Century Bubonic Plague hit.

“You’re incorporated? Fuck you, I hate corporations; you deserve everything that happens to you” is not what we should be doing - and it is most definitely not what Sanders should be advocating.

We need tight controls over bailout funds to ensure none of the money goes to stock buybacks and executive bonuses...but helping companies get back on their feet is the right thing to do.

Incorporation is, at bottom, simply how investment is pooled beyond the means of a single individual or family. Like fire 'a good servant but a bad master', yet there is nothing inherently pernicious in the concept.

The nice thing about the corporate veil: if you get a malicious and deep-pocketed customer who decides to sue you for no good reason, incorporation (in many but not all cases - there is a process by which the corporate veil can be pierced, but you must have really screwed up to have that happen) keeps this person from taking your house and other personal assets.

And a nice compliment from The Magistrate? I'm verklempt. Thank you, sir.

The "bailout" shall be a debt at above market rates collateralized by equity and control in those corporations.

"The people" (that would be you and I and other august members of taxpayers of America) made money from the past bailouts -- as much as 107 billion dollars between 2008 and 2013.
