Or do you imagine this is an original thought with Sanders?

Nigh on seventy years ago Mr. Truman attempted to proceed to this goal. The political forces opposed to it could not be overcome. The effort was renewed by Sen. Kennedy, and by Mr. and Mrs. Clinton. President Obama managed to take a good stride towards the goal. Democratic office-holders continue to work towards it.

Why are we supposed to come over all a'flutter because Sanders has disgorged yet another platitude? He has been sputtering about this for some time, and achieved nothing in particular towards its fruition. The only reasonable response to comments like this from Sanders is to treat them as the mere noise they are. They signify less than nothing.

It seems to be something of a hobby for the man, to make various pious noises in tones which are calculated to suggest no one else has ever said anything so radically progressive as what has just now left his mouth. Generally the things he says are not just trite, but reekily ancient, dating back decades. To all appearances, the man really has not had a new thought since about 1980, at the latest.

And it is worth pointing out that 'MediCare for All' is in essence just a sales slogan. The idea is that, because people are mostly satisfied with Medicare, using that name for a program of national health insurance will lend that established goodwill to the proposed reform.

But people ought not make the mistake of thinking Medicare is free. Premiums are paid out of Social Security checks by withholding, just as taxes are drawn from salary checks. These go towards the basic government insurance, which many find necessary to augment by private policies taken on in addition, and at additional cost. If the program were extended to all ages and conditions, monies would have to be collected.

I agree the total would be less than the sums currently paid to private insurers as premiums, but they would still be substantial, and many would still desire and seek additional private insurance. Not even MedicAid is free --- if you know someone who is on SSI or disability, you will find a premium for MedicAid is deducted from the check.

could have the coverage I have. I’m on SSDI and I have Medicare as a primary with Medicaid as a secondary. I pay nothing for doctors, hospital stays, surgeries, and medications. Not one cent. That’s what I wish for everyone in this country. I don’t know how much it would cost, though.

In the meantime, let’s work to get Biden elected so that the ACA can be expanded with a robust public option added.

Universal health coverage is a goal.
M4A is one possible implementation.
Every country with universal coverage has a different way of doing it.
We need to move towards it in a way that is politically feasible for our country.
