Biden holds 3-point edge over Trump in White House race: poll

A new national poll points to an extremely close contest between President Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden as the race for the White House shifts to a likely general election battle between the two.

Biden, the former vice president and all-but-certain 2020 Democratic presidential nominee, stands at 48 percent support among registered voters nationwide in a Monmouth University poll, with the GOP incumbent at 45 percent. Biden’s slight 3-point edge over Trump is within the poll’s sampling error, meaning the race is roughly tied between the two candidates.

Three percent said they would vote for an independent candidate in November’s general election, and 4 percent said they were undecided in the survey, which was conducted March 18-22 and released on Tuesday.

According to the poll, the president enjoys a nearly 2-to-1 margin over Biden in the 2,500 solidly red counties that Trump overwhelming won four years ago over 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. In the 360 solidly blue counties where Clinton crushed Trump, Biden is up by a 2-to-1 margin. But in the approximately 300 swing counties where the margins in the 2016 presidential election were 10 points or less, Biden tops Trump 50-41 percent.

"I'm so proud of him," she said, while I was in the chair down the hall awaiting a cleaning. The office is so empty you can hear everything.

Apparently Trump said something about not blaming the Chinese for the virus. That's why she's so proud of him. I almost pulled the bib off and walked out the door. I'm thinking all this bigoted divisive stuff year after year and they don't hear any of it, but one forced comment and they swallow it and bow.

Then my dentist reacted to her comment: "He'll definitely be re-elected now."

I don't know my dentist's politics. For the second time I nearly walked out the door. Then I calmed down and realized this is the typical bump for an incumbent during a crisis. For a normal president it would be a double digit spike, for this guy just a few.

However, no question Biden would have been better off if the virus never happened. Swing voters look for any excuse to remain with the incumbent. Some of this basic stuff like delaying the tax date will be credited to Trump.

We're looking at another razor tight outcome either way

And yes, I went through with the cleaning even though everybody was telling me to cancel. I went back and forth on the decision. My dentist said she is calling elderly patients and telling them to cancel. With everybody else they are surprised the percentage of cancellations is so high. I was the last patient of the day with a 2:30 appointment. She said the next two days are totally empty then she has some maintained appointments for Friday.

I tried to get in today because my mouth has been bothering me, but the dentist said she wasn’t even allowed to take emergencies. Luckily I am feeling better.

I think Biden will be fine. People will hopefully realize that it is state and local officials that have done the right things. Trump has done all he can to make things worse.

I'm here in Washington, watching as we go into total lockdown. Trump's credibility is going to start taking a beating as covid-19 continues its way into the red states, especially as he has no real authority to override the governors at this point and his promises continue to remain empty, while Biden's doing the right thing by remaining visible and authoritative.

It's possible by the 12th of April (Easter, when Trump thinks that easing can happen) that Washington State will be past the worst of this. We instituted distancing protocols earliest, and they have become progressively more restrictive, but I'd be surprised if Inslee declared an all-clear at that point. Meanwhile, I expect that states like Missouri, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas, Iowa, and the Dakotas will likely be really just entering the window, and won't be out of it until July at the earliest.

I also think that Trump's free daily advertising is going to stop within the next couple of weeks as he wears out his welcome on the various news channels. Once that happens, he'll become a lot less visible, while I suspect that Biden and Bloomberg may be working on an advertising blitz once the coronavirus does finally settle out.

Here’s another pollster that’s gaining traction
His poll average Biden an 11 pt lead

https://projects.jhkforecasts.com/presidential-forecast/

In the Monmouth poll as mentioned 300 swing counties where trump won, Biden holds a 9 pt lead, 50 to 41.
