"SNIP.....
CNBC reports business leaders are pushing the following women as Joe Bidens running mate: Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Rep. Val Demings.
Notably absent from the names mentioned is Stacey Abrams.
.....SNIP"

(320 posts)Once more....with feeling: He cannot pick Elizabeth Warren. The governor of Mass is a Republican and will get to pick an interim Senator if Biden wins. We are going to be hellish lucky to switch the Senate over to Dem. How DUMB would it be to give it back by allowing a Republican to be appointed?

The loser of the Markey/Kennedy race would be a shoo-in, or if Markey loses and decides to retire, perhaps Ayanna Pressley.
Vice President Warren? It can happen. Here's how:
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/3/5/1924805/-Vice-President-Warren-It-can-happen-Here-s-how
Ive read a bunch of people assuming that Elizabeth Warren cant be Vice President, or be in the next Presidents cabinet, because shed be giving up a Senate seat to the GOP after Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker appoints a Republican. Im here to tell you that it aint necessarily so. The mechanism is fairly simple she can resign this year and be replaced this year.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (www.ncsl.org/...), Massachusetts is one of 14 states which replace their Senators via a special election. Massachusetts law M.G.L.A. 54 §140 says this: 145-160 days after vacancy occurs. If a vacancy occurs after April 10 but on or before the 70th day before the regular state primary, the office shall appear on the regular state primary ballot. If a vacancy occurs after that time, the office shall appear on the state election ballot that November.
Governor Baker could appoint a Republican upon her resignation, but in the mechanism above, there are two options: If she resigns between today and April 9, there would be a special election some time between July 28 and September 16. If she resigns between April 10 and June 23, her seat would be up for a special election held on Election Day to fill the rest of the term. In either case, the winner of the election would be sworn in immediately.
Warrens resignation also solves a problem. Massachusetts is enduring a massively pointless primary fight between two strong Democrats Incumbent Senator Ed Markey and Congressman Joseph Kennedy III. If Warren resigns, Kennedy can simply move over and run for this other seat, and everybodys happy. Whoever Baker appoints would be a serious underdog to Rep. Kennedy. And its not like theres a lot going to get done that Warren would be able to stop in the Senate the rest of 2020. The Senate has done virtually nothing but confirm judges the whole term.

(3,818 posts)This is the kinda crap the GOP does. I guess "business leaders" have the DNC with the GOP. This is an aspect of the news that can wait. It's still, what July, before the convention.
It's lovely that a woman might be nominated but isn't this kinda back door deals that Debbie Wasserman Schwartz in Florida and Donna Brazill try to pull at the DNC meetings in 2015 & 2016.
Can we not say we have learned from those FUBAR's and move on?

"The most important thing and I've actually talked to Barack about this
the most important thing is that there has to be
someone who, the day after they're picked, is prepared to be president of the United States of America if something happened," Biden said.

(3,850 posts)She doesn't have the experience and has never held elected office. Given Biden's age I expect him to select some one much younger. The good news is he has several well qualified choices to select from. My favorites are Kamala and Gretchen Whitmer. Whitmer is newly elected and has said she isn't interested but that's what people usually say. Biden has a really deep bench to assemble his cabinet from.

(8,177 posts)Joe Biden is a business-friendly Democrat. To balance the ticket and broaden his support, he needs a progressive. Black voters have demonstrated their loyalty to Joe throughout the primaries, so I don't think a POC adds significantly to his appeal.

(6,043 posts)but Biden has floated the idea of putting e.g. Jamie Dimon and other Wall Streeters in his cabinet. No way would they join if Warren is VP. I think the chance of Warren being chosen is vanishingly small, however much sense she makes in other respects.
