(46,611 posts)Some of our older states assembled and formed in the intellectual ether of the US Constitution - PA, VA, NY, CT, RI - and have along history of what is in the public interest. Cuomo is demonstrating daily a textbook case of good government, emergency planning, the public welfare that the GOP cannot fathom at any level. NY was heavily influenced by the Progressive Era, the diversity, the cauldron of ideas as immigrants of all nationalities poured into the city. So yes, Cuomo would be a strong candidate if he wanted to be, but selling a NYer of Italian heritage is still difficult in many areas of the country.

(46,611 posts)1988 you still needed a WASP candidate. Gary Hart was the man. Dukakis was too ethnic, and because his politics was learned in Massachusetts, he had never run against strong opposition. He didn't know what he was doing. I daresay the majority of our political leaders still hail from the founding families of Mass Bay Colony, including the Bushes.

Thanks for your excellent description of traditional NY government, too.

(13,250 posts)He has shown real leadership whereas Trump has shown no leadership. I continue to believe that Joe Biden is not up to the task, and as the emergency we are in grows more serious by the day, we need someone as vigorous and accomplished as Governor Cuomo. And I think he would win in a 45 state landslide.
