Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumDNC should go with Cuomo for president
An excerpt from Newsday:
If extraordinary times require extraordinary measures, and they do, then this is the time for the Democratic Party to nominate Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo for president. Why?
First, because he is the only elected official in the United States today who has fully demonstrated the leadership, toughness, management skill and humanity that meeting the coronavirus pandemic demands. To be crudely political and practical he is the only Democrat who can absolutely beat President Donald Trump in November.
Second, because the coronavirus national emergency has revealed Trump's manifest unfitness for the office he holds, and put on display his utter inability to effectively use the powers and tools of the federal government in the current crisis. The country simply cannot afford four more years of this chaotic, corrupt and cold-blooded administration.
And third, because beyond this crisis many believe that the damage this president done thus far can be reversed. But this is not true if Trump has four more years to further damage and degrade the constitution, politicize the courts, dismantle key institutions like the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and make a fool of himself and our country on the world stage.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I'm hearing more and more rumblings about Andrew Cuomo. Newsday isn't the only place. Serious? I don't know. But these are proving to be extraordinary times.

(116,830 posts)Cuomo didn't enter the primaries and Biden has the support of the voters. Why would the DNC do the most undemocratic response and nominate someone who doesn't have the support of the voters? The only reason Cuomo should be considered is if Biden became unable to serve.

(28,833 posts)It's all just conjecture and opinion. Biden is ahead of Trump nationally and by nearly double digits in the counties most likely to be deciders in November.
It's also irrelevant. The DNC doesn't pick the candidate.

(296 posts)Mr. Larocca, if I understand correctly, is a Democrat from New York. Cuomo appears to be doing all he can, and is communicating quite well. He is also the only governor I know of who's daily briefings are being carried by national TV outlets. MSNBC, CNN as well as others. The New York positive bias from both Mr. Larocca, as well as many in political news industry, should not be taken as to extending across the country. Our governor has given a daily briefing,(not great action, but fair) not one bit of coverage nationally, as it should be. Simply put ; New York is a HOTSPOT, my state ISN'T! It's not my opinion, but I suspect the anti-New York bias would be a problem. Remember Ted Cruz and his New York City values slam at Donald Trump. Though not effective with republicans, could work against a Democrat. A full campaign such as what Hillary Clinton ran would overcome this, but not until this is over!

Are you one of those who imagines it is some sort of Politburo exercising an iron authority over subordinate Party members and the Party at large? It does not rig primaries and dictate candidates. It does the sort of office work needed to keep track of some internal functions, and puts on the convention. Its leader sometimes goes on the pundit circuit as a spokesperson. That really is about all. Even if every member of the DNC were suddenly seized of the conviction Gov. Cuomo should be our candidate, there is not one little thing they have the power to do that could make it happen.

(5,969 posts)Because some people are saying...This serves no purpose. Politicians looking good during a crisis always look appealing as soon as they do a semi decent job. That doesn't mean there will be knee jerk reactions to just treat the primaries as irrelevant.
For some reason, it seems that the side that lost wants to do everything to prevent the winner from actually getting the reward. The same side whined that there will be a price to pay should the DNC act against the "will of the voters".

(3,853 posts)He could NEVAH win a Dem primary. In that regard he's just like Bernie. His bombastic personality would wear thin very quickly. It serves him well as he tries to manage the CV-19 crisis but that's about it. He's not that popular in his own state though he's been in office for many years. Folks need to check out his history before proclaiming him as the Dems' best option to run against Trump Many of those folks probably have an ulterior motive and want to use it as a Biden attack. Not saying that's the OP's motive here.

He was a candidate and did not gain traction, but he is probably on all ballots. Nearly half the delegates have not been awarded. If Sanders and Biden imploded, could he reenter before April and get most of the remaining delegates?
Of course, that is not realistic. It is still nearly certain that Biden will get the majority of planned delegates and he will be the nominee. It would not be seen as legitimate to just draft someone.

I like Cuomo despite his flaws. He's tough, smart and confident - a good executive.
He easily beat back a challenge from the far left (Cynthia Nixon and Zephyr Teachout) in a blue state. He does well with urban PoC as well as rural whites, and his path to the presidency (should he ever choose to run) would thus likely resemble Biden's.

In any case, no matter how good ANYONE ELSE is right now, the process is way past the possibility of someone new not only getting on the ballot, but getting enough delegates to win the nomination. Biden is very close to the number needed. He has 1,174 out of the 1,991 delegates needed (Sanders has 862).

(11,479 posts)Democratic voters have already done that throwing their votes and support to Joe Biden. As for Andrew Cuomo? The man has definitely stepped up to the plate providing a leadership model in a time when DC leadership is extinct. But unless you were born yesterday, Cuomo has had presidential ambitions for years and been thoroughly dismissed by progressives as a DINO, at best.
So . . . there's a certain irony, as in bitter and misleading, that a Bernie supporter would be posting an article like this. For what reason? Certainly not for the sake of unity and certainly not for the sake of the Democratic Party or the necessity to rid ourselves of Trump in November.
Whatever 'rumblings' you're hearing are from the same people spreading atrocious lies about Biden, the latest being a rape charge. And no, this is not vetting. It's called smearing, spreading disinformation and hoping against hope that chaos will reroute the Democratic primary.

But in that case, I would hope it would be a Bernie.
