(9,194 posts)1. Can he/she be campaign and be elected
2. Can he/she step right in and govern
Those are my criteria anyway.
Rice has said that her parents taught her to "never use race as an excuse or advantage", and as a young girl she "dreamed of becoming the first U.S. senator from the District of Columbia"

(58,785 posts)To choose for an assistant president and friend, capable of handling a big, important portfolio. The role he filled for President Obama.
This isn't the same as "can he/she step right in and govern" -- traditionally "right in" only after succeeding to the presidency. Biden wants his VP to actually step right in and "govern" with him under his authority, again as he did as Obama's workmate.
Unlike the thinking of many posters, I'd move political campaign considerations down in priority. Not that they aren't important, but Biden is well known and liked nationally, and is probably as reassuring to potential conservative-leaning swing voters as any Democrat could be. It very quickly becomes 90% about the presidential candidate and HIS or HER coattails anyway, and in order to get a great assistant president I'm guessing he could choose a running mate who satisfied the political considerations of getting elected relatively weakly.
Electing our first woman VP (Democrat of course!) will be a very significant step forward in itself. What I can imagine is Biden naming some of his cabinet appointees fairly early in the GE, and those would also be used to meet expectations of moving people from various groups and geographic locations into power.

(9,194 posts)for the role of "Assistant President", having worked with Biden in the Obama administration. There is a high probability of "simpatico" as Biden put it. She brings a strong foreign policy portfolio to the VPOTUS rank which is vital given the devastation wrought to the global order by Trump, Putin and the rise of international 'strong men". I don't see being a political novice as a weakness for Rice, particularly as Biden is long in the elective/political/legislative suits.

(58,785 posts)I've liked Warren in the role, not least because Biden himself reportedly did in 2015, but in spite of an energy and passion that would complement him very well, she's practically his age, and etc., etc., etc.
I've always imagined Warren as a Frances Perkins type and would love to see what she'd do domestically with a powerful cabinet mandate, Treasury being the one speculated about most. I have no doubt that she fully intends to endorse Biden, but as in 2016 after talks about some things she wants.

(2,582 posts)The fact theyve both said nothing is a very loud silence in his favor. Harris the AG who called Biden on stances from 59 years ago, and Warren who called ally Bernie on his lies, neither would give slack on anything that sounded valid.

(48,699 posts)And both Warren and Harris attacked him during the campaign. Neither has apologized, as far as I know.
His running mate should be in a lockstep with him. If he cannot finish his term, the V.P. should be able to take where he left off, not trying to implement her own ideas.

(6,300 posts).... who participated in the primaries are chosen. Plenty of reasons why. At this point in time, my choices are Val Demings, or Ayanna Presley. Both have a commanding presence.
I don't understand the fascination people have with Kamala Harris. She barely achieved 5% support from black people during her entire campaign, not to mention unsuccessfully trying to throw Joe Biden under the bus a couple of times. She would be a detriment to his campaign. That's my opinion.

(6,300 posts)Here are three reasons why I believe my assessment is correct.
1. There are some candidates who I believe will bring little or nothing to his campaign. ( the three you mentioned being among them.)
2. There are several candidates that would better serve the country, and themselves by staying in the positions they now hold. ( Several of these could fit into my first reason.)
3. There are several candidates who would be ideal choices for key positions in a Biden Administration.
The fascination many here at Democratic Underground have with one particular candidate is especially perplexing, but should probably be discussed in a different setting.

(3,974 posts)I think the fascination by for a certain candidate is because they supported that candidate for the nomination and now want that candidate for #2. They need to let go and objectively consider what is the best ticket to beat Trump.

(82,383 posts)Do people vote for someone from their state out of state pride?
I am thinking not as there are plenty of red states where they would still not vote for the ticket because the VP would be from their state. They just insult that person too.
Biden and Palin were picked for VP though they were each from 3 EV states and from the dominant party of said states.
Swing states might be different; would picking someone from OH or PA help with winning the states?

(82,383 posts)ever show such a thing? But most of the candidates on Biden's list seem to be from blue states anyway. Is there any of them you can argue we need that candidate to win that state?
He'd need one from Michigan, OH or PA or FL.
Someone mentioned Val Demings, a congresswoman from FL. Would FL be more likely to vote blue if she were on the ticket as VP?
