Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumPresidential primary elections can only be delayed for a limited time.
In many states, that election is also an election with many other positions on the ballot. In Wisconsin's case, some of those other elections affect positions in which the newly-elected official takes office soon after the election. So, that election cannot be delayed.
In other states, primaries have been delayed, but the issues with the COVID-19 pandemic will still be issues at the time the delayed election is held. In any case, elections must take place before the Party conventions later in the Summer, so that delegates to the convention can be allocated. The Democratic Party has delayed its convention until August, and may have to hold it virtually, if the pandemic does not let up.
Every state allows for absentee balloting. Some make that easy; others still have antiquated rules regarding absentee voting. Some states are expanding voting by mail, specifically due to the current health crisis. In any case, primary elections always have lower turnouts than general elections. Results are always from those who do vote, and that will be the case in 2020 as well.
If your state's primary is still to be held, please request and absentee ballot and vote, as soon as you can. Make your vote count. The elections will be held. The Party Convention will take place, in one form or another. A nominee for President will be chosen for the Democratic Party. Those things will happen. So, please find out what you need to do in your state to vote, and do that thing.
It's simple. But, the primaries will take place. The General Election will take place. You can choose whether to take part or not. I recommend that everyone participate. It's important.

(96,043 posts)There really is no choice if we are to conduct elections, and that is an incontestable requirement.
"From Bernies perspective, dropping out of a race once you have no chance of winning is peculiar behavior that can only be explained by the work of a hidden hand. For most politicians, though, it is actually standard operating procedure. Only Sanders seems to think the normal thing to do once voters have made clear they dont want to nominate you is to continue campaigning anyway."
"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

I have edited my post. Thank you for alerting me to my typo.
I don't think I've ever made that mistake before. Perhaps I will think longer before reacting when someone else does it now. Mistakes in typing are pretty common, especially when typing quickly. It looks like I clicked too early and did not proofread well enough.

(147,885 posts)I rarely look closely at election calendars or processes in any but my own state.
Apparently, every state has its own schedule and process. If I had more time, I'd go and check that out.
In Minnesota, we used to hold caucuses for the purpose of allocating presidential convention delegates. This year, we had a primary, with only the presidential office appearing on it. We will also have a primary election for state and other offices later this year.
The reason for the separate primary or caucuses for presidential candidates is due to the need to allocate delegates for party conventions, which traditionally have taken place in July, it seems. It's a complicated, but crucial, step along the way to the general election in November.
