Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThe only thing Bernie's succeeding in at this point is demonstrating,
perhaps incorrectly, that his policies have very little support, even among Democrats.
He could have ended up on a high note, after California. Every day since then the air is coming out of his campaign tires, and he's looking smaller and smaller than before.
That does no good for the agenda he claims to support.

(10,528 posts)droning on about his political fantasies. He's going to be on Bill Mahr's show tonight. Doesn't look like he's getting out any time soon. Looks more and more like a repeat of his 2016 shit show. I hope he's just crushed and humiliated in the remaining primaries.

(1,089 posts)In my mind, a full-blown "policy" consists of 2 things...an identified problem and a proposed solution.
Bernie has correctly identified (albeit not the first by any stretch) quite a few problems that most Democrats, many Independents and even some Republicans fully agree need to be addressed. But merely identifying a problem is only half of the battle...the other half is coming up with realistic and viable ways to actually solve it.
And that is where Sanders has failed miserably...and why the vast majority of Democrats now look at him as a half-assed candidate.

The progressive movement should and will continue into the future. It is a vitally important part of the Democratic Party that simply needs a new face to emerge as its leader and spokesperson.
At the moment, however, we're pretty much just all sitting around twiddling out thumbs waiting for the current one to come to the same realization. Tick-tock. Time sure does move slowly when you watch the clock.

(96,043 posts)Sanders in his colossal egotism conflates support for certain policy goals with desire for him to be the leader of a movement to achieve those goals.
This is nonesense.
Even leaving aside the fact that most of those goals are general among Democratic voters and enjoy broad support among Democratic office-holders and Party officials, virtually no one, not even among Sanders' supporters, thinks he can actually achieve them should he come to hold the highest office in the land.
Expressions support for Sanders are made as a marker of political orientation. Expresing support for Sanders says 'I'm not a moderate, I'm well to the left of most people', and as with most such things, serves to identify a 'cool' group separate from the general run of 'squares'. People doing this do not even particularly want to prevail, in the sense of being in the majority. It is axiomatic that a majority can never be 'cool', the feeling of being 'hip' and part of an 'in-crowd' depends on being outnumbered by the host of the unwashed and unenlightened. The point is not to achieve any political goal, to secure any discrete reform, it is simply to be sure one is perceived as a particular, and special, kind of person.
People who have an actual interest in achieving the goals widespread Democrats, the goals of all left and progressive and liberal persons in general, recognize readily Sanders is far too flawed as a politician, and as a personality, to make any progress towards their goals. They know Sanders has not achieved any measurable advance towards them in his long Congressional career. They know Sanders' claim to hold patents and copyrights on these goals is nonesense, because they know their own desires pre-date Sanders, and exist in their hearts and minds without the slightest reference to him or influence by him.
In short, while Sanders imagines himself to be the indispensable man, an overwhelming majority of Democratic voters are clear in their minds that Sanders is quite dispensable, and are determined to see him disposed of, as soon as possible.
"From Bernies perspective, dropping out of a race once you have no chance of winning is peculiar behavior that can only be explained by the work of a hidden hand. For most politicians, though, it is actually standard operating procedure. Only Sanders seems to think the normal thing to do once voters have made clear they dont want to nominate you is to continue campaigning anyway."
"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

(1,089 posts)Groucho Marx said something a bit similar many decades ago.
Although in his case he was joking that a club would have to lower its standards to allow him in...while the most extreme BS supporters believe the club's standards are not high enough for them to join.
Either way the end result is the same...winding up on the outside looking in. And that's not the way to help implement the changes that you claim you want. Incessant pouting and temper tantrums may sometimes work when you're a toddler but it tends to work less the older you get. Then again, from the looks of some of the most ardent Sanders supporters many of them do not appear to have been out of diapers for very long.

(5,385 posts)People are seeing what is needed from the president in a crisis. Frankly, imagining Bernie as President during all this frightens me. He likes to just sit back and complain, and then claim credit for other people's work instead of actually participating in the process. He also only values the opinion of people who agree with him on everything.
