Democratic Primaries

We did not have the most politically astute candidates in 2000 and 2016 but 3rd party "progressive" candidate voters help tip the balance to "regressive" Republicans.

(9,263 posts)"progressive far left" went with Nader/Stein knowing full well that could cost the Gore/Hillary the elections. Ths is NO talking point from the RW but a solid FACT.

(12,665 posts)Even with the Nader interference, it felt like Gore was on the path to winning the recount until Scalia saw that coming, and stopped the count and threw it to Bush. So to me, the problem was more with a radical right wing activist SC justice making a partisan call, than the Nader factor for the ultimate loss.
And with 2020 shaping up to be the calamity it is, dredging up crap from 4 and 20 years ago is not going to help us this time around. If those 3rd party types are committed to political-social suicide by voting again for Stein or Trump, we're not going to change their minds at all at this point.
Seeing an illustration with Nader, Stein and Trump, and bad-mouthing Gore and Clinton just feels counter productive and set me off.

(96,043 posts)His selection of Lieberman for a running mate, and distancing himself from President Clinton, are sufficient demonstration of that.
I supported Mrs. Clinton in both 2008 and 2016, but she is not particularly good at campaigning for office. That is unfortunate, as she would be an excellent President, and quite good at the 'retail politics' necessary to persuade office-holders towards a desired action.
I understand your distress, at the casual dismissal of these two Democratic stalwarts in the post, but if anything, it adds heft to the point made, that third party spoilers aid Republicans, to have it made by someone who might well have succumbed to the appeal of such candidates out of disenchantment, or lack of enthusiasm for the best choice.

When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

My post is obviously not right wing. It is about theoretically "progressive" 3rd party voters who, in practice, betray progressive causes by actions that help elect right-wing Presidents.
At the top I also mentioned that, in retrospect, our Democratic candidates in 2000 and 2016 made a few costly mistakes.
Examples:
(1) Al Gore refused to campaign with still popular, very likable and politically talented Bill Clinton.
(2) Hillary Clinton neglected to campaign in important Midwest battleground states late in her campaign.

(9,263 posts)one bit. Ideologues rather see the ship go down to "teach us a lesson" in drowning than following THEIR ideology than anything else.
I see NO replay in 2020
