Beto taps into old Senate campaign network: 'The road to America runs through Texas'
KATY, Texas Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke, lagging behind other candidates in both national and Texas polls, was in Katy on Saturday to reaffirm his strength in the Lone Star State.
The El Paso native is fresh off Thursday's debate at Texas Southern University in which he made headlines over his "hell, yes" declaration to buy back military-style assault weapons.
O'Rourke who narrowly lost a Senate bid against incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is sticking around Texas for the weekend after the stop in Katy, which is west of Houston in Fort Bend, Harris and Waller counties. He's also visiting Plano on Sunday. The white male suspect in the Aug. 3 mass shooting that killed 22 people and injured 25 at an East El Paso Walmart graduated from Plano Senior High School.
Those at Saturday's event chanted "Beto" as the former congressman approached to begin his speech outdoors at a brewery.
