Thanks

(171,767 posts)place. I am already intrigued!!
AND I already have an observation. Is that preview necessary? Maybe because we haven't had that before, but to me seems like a time waster.
EarlG
(22,706 posts)I had a couple of MIRTers say they would like the option to just post without previewing, so I think we will definitely do something about this.
We'll either put the Post button back on the first page (as it is on DU3), or we'll include an option in Account Settings that allows you to display the button.

(122,450 posts)In the new version it looks like you have to preview before you can post. It's an extra step but maybe it will result in fewer mistakes or badly-considered posts? Glad to see a spell-check feature, too.

(171,767 posts)I seem to have rec'd ocelot's response.
The big brown fox
Edit to add: I did click on rec'd in original OP; did it default to ocelot's?
Elad
(11,406 posts)Since it's not visible on DU3.
EarlG
(22,706 posts)But you should be able to rec everywhere else on the site -- let us know if you have any further issues with it.

(122,450 posts)OK, the preview indicates you can't. The title was, "Can you do special characters in thread titles, like ü or ø?" They didn't show up in the preview. Can we get that fixed?
EarlG
(22,706 posts)At the moment, DU3 and DU4 have the same restrictions on which special characters can be used. However, we can probably look into this down the road and see if we can make some improvements in this area. (This is a security issue by the way, to do with what data can and can't be submitted to the server, so it's not a super-easy fix -- Elad can probably explain it better than I can.)

Off to check out the site, but it looks great!

(152,792 posts)It can be challenging to navigate, but I am getting used to it.
It looks clean and very well put together.

(82,849 posts)Just checking in, I'll see if I can break things later. First off, I wan to say I appreciate the strike-through feature and its return. Will the font color feature return? I liked posting a question or a quiz and then putting the answer below the question in font color white so later posters didn't have to avoid spoiler responses.
EarlG
(22,706 posts)But I wont rule it out for a future update
Lasher
(28,554 posts)Do we need to preview everything?
Lasher
EarlG
(22,706 posts)But I think that will be one of the first things we resolve when we take our first break for bug fixes. A lot of folks so far have asked to have the post button back.
Lasher approves.

(113,113 posts)I did not see a "HOME" button?
EarlG
(22,706 posts)To check it out, just click the site logo at the top of any page.
Oh one thing to note: the Trending and Greatest sections on the DU4 homepage are currently not updating in real time so the threads in those sections may be old. This is deliberate for technical reasons at the moment the final version will work correctly.

(162,784 posts)Very easily may promote a more gracious feeling, making it harder to build up some steam at someone who seems to be breathing down one's neck! You never know, but the change makes an immediate difference in the vibes! It's so different. it will take a little time to make the adjustments internally to the new environment! I really think it seems an improvement.
It may encourage the idea of taking more quality time before firing off a response.
Just discovered the posting tips, and it's an outstanding improvement, should add a great deal. How nice!
Thank you.
kentuck
(113,113 posts)And it did not go thru for me. The email seems to still be a little "squirrelly".
(edit: Is the font a little large for the OP Titles in the Forums?)
EarlG
(22,706 posts)In that instance, it was because the first time you write a post or mail message, you have to preview it first, then post/send. Thats a change from current DU, where you can post/send right away. So the person wrote a message and hit the Preview button, but then just naturally thought that theyd sent the message when in fact they hadnt. Could that be what happened to you?
(FWIW, were going to solve this when we pause testing for the first round of bug fixes.)

(28,554 posts)Is this by design?
ETA: Here is the reply in question: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100217382365#post2
EarlG
(22,706 posts)we haven't programmed the Recommendations page to include reply recs. I'll have to discuss with Elad how feasible this would be to do.
Lasher
(28,554 posts)Maybe some others will jump in and rec it to test this out.
EarlG
(22,706 posts)it doesn't work in this specific forum because recs are turned off in here at the moment.
I'll start a new thread in here with an idea for testing this out in a moment.

(68,493 posts). . . . . I would find it helpful if My Posts could have a direct pin instead of multiple clicks under My Stuff.

(188,109 posts)Everyone has to give a stool sample, right?
EarlG
(22,706 posts)I don't think I'd be able to come up with a way to float a "My Posts" button, in a place that makes sense on every page, outside of the main navigation menus.
If a single click to My Posts is essential for you, you might be able to better solve this issue by using a browser bookmark that takes you directly to https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=myposts. Depending on your browser, you should be able to place a bookmark button in a toolbar at the top of your browser, which will get you where you want to go in a single click.
Stinky The Clown
(68,493 posts)Which is okay. Just asking.
By the way, I like the tools we can now use for text, like highlights and strikethroughs.

I only had a few minutes to stop by yesterday. I am back for a closer look. I do like the new format, much easier to read.

Stinky The Clown
(68,493 posts). . . . . when entering text in the thread title box and the number of characters that appear when viewing threads. See my post 48 in this thread for an example.

On the other hand, maybe the issue is not allowing thread sites to grow to two lines.

(22,706 posts)Does that look like what you're seeing?
Stinky The Clown
(68,493 posts)It is in the view of the whole thread, here: https://du4.democraticunderground.com/13193
Posts longer than will fit end in an ellipsis instead of going to a second line.
EarlG
(22,706 posts)Thats deliberate . it works the exact same way as DU3 (the only difference is that DU3 truncates without the ellipsis).
Stinky The Clown
(68,493 posts)I can guess the ellipsis is better since it is an easy visual cue.
EarlG
(22,706 posts)Yeah, in reply trees on DU3 the subject lines are just cut off at the right edge with no indication that they're truncated.
brooklynite
(96,882 posts)Is this just a short list of the most frequently visited locations?
EarlG
(22,706 posts)Almost every forum on DU can be subscribed to by clicking the Subscribe button near the top of the forum.
New threads in these forums will appear on your Subcriptions page. (This is not new to DU4.)
On DU4 you can get additional notifications when someone starts a thread in one of your Subscribed forums. And your Subscribed forums appear in the left column navigation as a quick way to reach them.
On DU4 you can also subscribe to people by clicking the Subscribe button their Journal or Profile.
Lasher
(28,554 posts)There, I said it.
Don't worry -- you're not alone. This will be remedied in the next round of bug fixes, likely at the beginning of next week.
