DU4 Bug Reports
Related: About this forumLog in buttons don't work...
In order to sign in, since the DU4 test was put up, I have to open a thread and ONLY by trying to rec the thread can I get to the alternate log in/open an account page.
Can't use the reply buttons or any of the other links that jump to the alternate log in page.

(22,706 posts)By "alternate log in" pages do you mean the DU4 version of the log in pages?
Currently the way to access DU4 is to log in as usual on DU3 and then click the link in the blue bar or just visit du4.democraticunderground.com -- it's not possible (or rather, it shouldn't be possible) to view DU4 pages when you are logged out of DU.
The DU4 log in pages do exist, and they should function normally, but they're not intended for use at the moment. Are you trying to find a workaround to access them?
Just trying to get a handle on what it is you're specifically trying to do.

(94,687 posts)When I shut down for the night so I have to log in when I get back online. I cannot log in to DU3 unless I open a thread and try to use the REC button which throws me to the log in/open an acct. page in DU3. Can't get to DU4 without log in first in DU3. SO that is the only way, as described above, that I can log in at all, been so since the DU4 test option was made available. Maybe since the day prior but it started about five days ago at least.
Thanks!

(22,706 posts)at the top of every DU3 page... are you not seeing that? Or is it not working? If you can see it, what happens when you try to use it?

(94,687 posts)Home page, I normally use the log in button at the upper R corner of the page and any other link to log in at any page, does not work. The cursor doesn't even change to indicate a live link. I also cannot use the "reply to" button on any thread to get to the alternate log in page, as I call it.
Also, the links to videos in the R hand column in DU3 only open when the cursor is over the image but not the text part even when logged in. The cursor doesn't indicate a live link when over the text.
Clicking on any of the links not operating, nothing happens no matter how many times you click on it, doesn't have a live link to activate.
I have been dealing with a major personal issue, sorry I have been available to communicate these things much of the week.

(22,706 posts)Honestly I'm pretty baffled, I haven't heard a report of this before so I'm not sure what it could be. It could be something to do with the way your browser is set up. Do you know how long this has been going on? Did it work in the past?
What device, operating system, and browser are you using?
Thanks,
EG

(94,687 posts)WIN10, Firefox. This is a problem that has occurred only once or twice before this in the last year. This is the longest it has been going on for me. Normally all those buttons work, this situation started early this week.
I'm kind of baffled, doesn't make sense. I have changed nothing in my settings for the site or my OS. There was an update to WIN10 a couple days go but it started before that.
Yes, all this is on DU3 when I first arrive to the site. The RH column thing is true whether logged in or not.

(22,706 posts)First:
Check to see if Firefox is up to date:
1. Click the "hamburger" icon (the three horizonal lines) at the top right of your browser window.
2) Click "Help" then "About Firefox"
3) A window will pop up which will tell you if your browser is up to date -- if it isn't, you should take the option to update it.
If that doesn't work:
Cache and cookies
Sometimes clearing these can help. There are simple instructions here, note that on there is further reading on the right side of the page if you have any questions:

Might be worth a try...
The reason I shut down when I go offline is to conduct all maintenance before closing out. Seriously, I get updates immediately, I use Avast cleanup program that catches all updates and allows for browser, cookie and cache dump which I do every time I go offline and before returning online and sometimes in between if I am on for a long time and do a lot of browsing. I keep a pretty clean machine. Past experience as a known advocate for things we hold dear in a hostile environment taught me all about that and being hacked long ago. The least time intensive management seems to be programs like the cleanup tool from Avast, which I pay for.
And I check into what it's doing often so I'm thinking it's not my browser or OS since those have both updated during the time this issue has been in play I think even the Avast update was since this started. I don't have any nonworking button issues elsewhere.
Hope that helps. It's weird because I have cleaned and cleared many times and had updates since this began.
There's a wide skill gap among DU members when it comes to general computer use, so it helps to know that you don't need to try these troubleshooting steps.
Have you tried visiting DU with Firefox in Private Browsing mode (no extensions running)? If not I'd be curious to see what would happen.
