Israel and Hamas are both facing calls to support the U.S.-backed ceasefire and hostage deal that was endorsed by the U.N. Security Council earlier this week. While Hamas has welcomed the proposal, Israeli leaders have yet to publicly commit to its terms, including a full end to the war rather than just a pause in the fighting for the exchange of captives. This comes as a major new U.N. report accuses Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity throughout its eight-month assault on the territory. The death toll in Gaza has now passed 37,000, including more than 15,000 children. "This is inhumane and catastrophic," says senior Palestinian diplomat Majed Bamya, who says "2.3 million Palestinians, every single day, are fighting to survive" while the ceasefire proposal languishes. He also stresses that peace in the region is only possible by "ending the occupation and allowing two states to live side by side."

(19,518 posts)The world had been waiting since May 31 for the terrorist's answer on the ceasefire proposal. On June 11, the terrorists replied by making more demands.
And of course, Theocracy Now! is busy shilling Hamas talking points.
Secretary of State Tony Blinken said Wednesday that Hamas has not accepted the U.S.-backed proposal for a hostage and ceasefire deal and presented "numerous changes" that go beyond its previous positions.
Why it matters: The U.S. and international mediators see the proposal as the best chance to end eight months of war. About 120 hostages are still being held by Hamas in Gaza and more than 37,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel in the war in Gaza, according to local health authorities.
Driving the news: Hamas sent its response to the proposal to Egyptian and Qatari mediators on Tuesday evening.

(19,518 posts)President Biden and the leaders of 16 countries whose citizens Hamas terrorists hold hostage "put the squeeze on Hamas".
As leaders of countries deeply concerned for the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, including many of our own citizens, we fully support the movement towards a ceasefire and hostage release deal now on the table and as outlined by President Biden on May 31, 2024. There is no time to lose.
We call on Hamas to close this agreement, that Israel is ready to move forward with, and begin the process of releasing our citizens.
We note that this agreement would lead to an immediate ceasefire and rehabilitation of Gaza together with security assurances for Israelis, and Palestinians, and opportunities for a more enduring long-term peace and a two-state solution. At this decisive moment, we call on the leaders of Israel as well as Hamas to make whatever final compromises are necessary to close this deal and bring relief to the families of our hostages, as well as those on both sides of this terrible conflict, including the civilian populations. It is time for the war to end and this deal is the necessary starting point.

(59,996 posts)Democracy Now! is an hour-long TV, radio, and Internet news program based in Manhattan and hosted by journalists Amy Goodman (who also acts as the show's executive producer), Juan González,[1][2] and Nermeen Shaikh. The show, which airs live each weekday at 8 a.m. Eastern Time, is broadcast on the Internet and via more than 1,400 radio and television stations worldwide.[3]
The program combines news reporting, interviews, investigative journalism and political commentary from a progressive perspective. It documents social movements, struggles for justice, activism challenging corporate power and operates as a watchdog outfit regarding the effects of American foreign policy.[2] Democracy Now! views as its aim to give activists and the citizenry a platform to debate people from "The Establishment".[2] The show is described as progressive[4] by fans as well as critics, but Goodman rejects that label, calling the program a global newscast that has "people speaking for themselves".[1] Democracy Now! describes its staff as "includ[ing] some of this country's leading progressive journalists."[5]

Awards and reception
Democracy Now! and its staff have received several journalism awards, including the Gracie Award from American Women in Radio & Television;[38] the George Polk Award for its 1998 radio documentary Drilling and Killing: Chevron and Nigeria's Oil Dictatorship, on the Chevron Corporation and the deaths of two Nigerian villagers protesting an oil spill;[39] and Goodman with Allan Nairn won Robert F. Kennedy Memorial's First Prize in International Radio for their 1993 report, Massacre: The Story of East Timor, which involved first-hand coverage of genocide during the Indonesian occupation of East Timor.[40]
On October 1, 2008, Goodman was named as a recipient of the 2008 Right Livelihood Award,[41] in connection with her years of work establishing Democracy Now! and in 2009, she, like her frequent guest Glenn Greenwald, was awarded the first annual Izzy Award (named after journalist I. F. "Izzy" Stone) for "special achievement in independent media".[42] Her co-host Juan González was inducted into the New York chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists' Hall of Fame on November 19, 2015.[43][44]

Truth is that the stars of the shows on the Democracy Now! Youtube channel need to take responsibility and apologize for helping both Bush and Trump to win. Yes, Amy Goodman got rich, but look at all the harm she helped usher in:
- the Iraq War
- the Roberts Court
- the Alito appointment
- the Citizens United Decision
- the end of Roe
- the family separation policy
- unnecessary deaths from covid due to misinformation
- a conservative Supreme Court for the next generation
Democracy Now! amplified Tara Reade's claims in 2020, doing its best to ensure that Trump got a second term, and it currently platforms pro-terrorist propagandists and Vote Uncommitted chaos agents. Yes indeed, Democracy Now is once again doing its best to elect the Republican.
Democracy Now! is garbage. As for Amy Goodman, I don't know how she sleeps at night.

It's disgusting.

Democracy Now!, also called Democracy Now! The War and Peace Report, Democracy Now Independent Global News, or Democracy News, was founded on February 19, 1996, at WBAI in New York City by journalists Amy Goodman, Juan González, Larry Bensky, Salim Muwakkil, and Julie Drizin.[14][2] It originally aired on five Pacifica Radio stations.[1] Goodman is the program's principal host, with Juan González and Nermeen Shaikh as frequent co-hosts.[13] Jeremy Scahill, an investigative reporter and co-founding editor for The Intercept,[15] has been a frequent contributor since 1997.[1]

Democracy Now! began as a radio program broadcast from the studios of WBAI, a local Pacifica Radio station in New York City. In early September 2001, amid a months-long debate over the mission and management of Pacifica, Democracy Now! was forced out of the WBAI studios. Goodman took the program to the Downtown Community Television Center located in a converted firehouse building in New York City's Chinatown, where the program began to be televised.[27][28] Only a few days later on September 11, 2001 Democracy Now! was the closest national broadcast to Ground Zero. On that day Goodman and colleagues continued reporting beyond their scheduled hour-long time slot in what became an eight-hour marathon broadcast. Following 9/11, in addition to radio and television, Democracy Now! expanded their multimedia reach to include cable, satellite radio, Internet, and podcasts.[27]
In November 2009, Democracy Now! left their broadcast studio in the converted DCTV firehouse, where they had broadcast for eight years.[28] The studio subsequently moved to a repurposed graphic arts building in the Chelsea District of Manhattan.[28] In 2010, the new 8,500-square-foot[29] Democracy Now! studio became the first radio or television studio in the nation to receive LEED Platinum certification,[30][31] the highest rating awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council.
