on the abortion issue. By trying to please both sides, he is alienating both sides. The polarization on the issue that he encouraged by backing the Evangelical anti abortionists has also polarized the majority of women, who are pro choice. That polarization leaves Trump with no middle space that he is now desperately trying to position himself in.

If Trump holds his base Evangelicals with an anti abortion position, he loses the majority of women. If he tries to please the pro choice majority, he loses his Evangelical base.
