At least two women in Georgia have died since the state's six-week abortion ban went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Candi Miller and Amber Thurman, both Black women and mothers to young children, died after they were unable to access care for rare but typically treatable complications caused by medication abortion. We hear more from ProPublica editor Ziva Branstetter, whose publication reported on the preventable deaths of Miller and Thurman, and from reproductive justice advocate Monica Simpson. "We are in a maternal healthcare crisis in our state," says Simpson, the executive director of SisterSong, an organization that works throughout the southern United States on behalf of communities of color, which disproportionately suffer the impacts of restrictions on abortion care.

(23,131 posts)Would that or should that matter? If that part was left out of the title it would have just as much impact.
Reverse the logic. Would it matter more or less if they were white women who died? No, because two women died. It doesn't matter their ethnicity. They still died because of big republican government overreach.
My two cents on this unfolding tragedy.

(1,051 posts)The loss of these 2 fine black women is an absolute tragedy. Their families will feel their loss forever. I find "Democracy Now's reporting on this absolute tragedy hollow at best. "Democracy Now" was a big supporter of Nader in 2000 and helped Nader spread his big lie that there were no differences between Al Gore and bushthief. SCOTUS appointments were one of a long list of major differences that "Democracy Now" refused to report in 2000. They helped to make the overturning of Roe vs Wade possible with their shilling for Nader in 2000. Now they're upset about this terrible tragedy that they helped make possible. I'm not a fan of such terrible hypocrisy. I haven't watched "Democracy Now" in years because of their shilling for Nader in 2000.

That was 90+% of the rest of the corporate media which did infinitely more damage to Al's electoral chances and the nation by trashing his credibility over Democracy Now; doing what their name calls for to basically cover the workings of Democracy.
You can't have partial democracy, it will wither on the vine.
Al Gore wasn't and isn't intimidated by an actual free press, here he is complementing Amy Goodman and her work.

(1,051 posts)They gave Nader the opportunity to spread his big lie that there were no differences between Al Gore and bushthief. How many viewers from Florida were watching and bought Nader's big lie?

(1,051 posts)I saw Nader on "Democracy Now" numerous times during the 2000 campaign and not once was he ever challenged about his big lie that their were no differences between Al Gore and bushthief. The corporate media was solidly behind bushthief and made no bones about it. The Daily Howler archives is the only written record of it. Too many in the progressive media were championing Nader. Neither the corporate or the progressive media has ever done a full and fair investigation of the bushthief coup in 2000. It's the Presidential election stealing roadmap that the orange turd used in 2020 and is using right now,
Uncle Joe
(60,242 posts)to my memory they never cited Democracy Now.
Democracy Now allows the guests on their program to actually speak their truth.
The Daily Howler did cite many pundits and their propaganda on corporate media conglomerates MSNBC, CNN, NBC etc. etc. numerous times, Chris Matthews and Tim Russert come to mind along with a host of others, but no Amy Goodman.
The Daily Howler's one flaw was in referring to them as liberal not corporate.

(1,051 posts)I watched Nader make the claim with my own eyes and ears on Democracy Now in 2000. As far as I know, the Daily Howler is the only written record that exists that fully documents the media's war against Al Gore in 2000 with many specific examples. I also have vivid memories of Tim Russert bragging with glee to Tom Brokaw during an NBC Nightly News broadcast in 2000 that his only source for information on the Gore campaign was the RNC, the most notoriously inaccurate source he could've used. Nothing was ever done about it because back then, NBC was owned by GE whose CEO Jack Welch was a well known, big time repug. I agree with you that Al Gore's efforts to give the general public access to what we now call the Internet was a threat to the entrenched corporate media and they acted to get rid of the threa, democracy be damnedt. Some additional motive for the Washington Post was the fact that Katherine Graham's father was one of the people who gave George Bush, Sr. the money to start his Texas oil company. I never have figured out what additional motivation was behind the NYT's behavior. Too many in the progressive media in 2000 also bought Nader's big lie. The Nation magazine also comes to mind for this same reason.
Some of the media's bad 2000 behavior is rearing its ugly head again in 2024. Too many in the corporate media now think that defending democracy is a partisan issue. The current editor of the NYT is one and I recently got after NBC News for essentially doing the same thing by characterizing the democrats efforts at calling out the orange turds attacks on democracy as "violent rhetoric" We are truly in scary times. bushthief's theft of the 2000 election with help from both the media and Nader is one of the great tragedy's in our country's history.

(60,242 posts)Should the major corporate media networks be eliminated from the cable news forum as well?
GoreWon2000
(1,051 posts)The progressive media had the reputation of supposedly being better than the corporate media but too many of them also bought Nader's big lie and I think they should be called out for it. BTW, in his speech at the 2004 Dem convention, Al Gore did just exactly that.
Uncle Joe
(60,242 posts)What he did do in response to the dysfunction of the corporate media (as is well documented by the Daily Howler) is start his own progressive network in Current T.V. which he eventually sold to Al Jazeera.
You cite no actual concrete evidence for trashing a progressive news network on a thread about banned abortion tragedies while giving a free pass to the corporate media if they're posted here on the cable news network forum.
I did post evidence of Al praising Amy Goodman and I will take that any day.

(1,051 posts)Too many in the progressive media bought Nader's big lie in 2000 and made no effort to hide their bias. Al Gore actually addressed it in his 2004 Democratic national convention speech. The progressive media failed in 2000 just like the corporate media did. Neither have ever done a full and fair investigation of the bushthief 2000 coup. Bting up the bushthief 2000 coup is still taboo in both the corporate and progressive media. I know because I've tried. FYI, Democracy Now has had Nader on post 2000 and he still was spreading his big lie and he was still refusing to take responsibility for what he did in 2000. One time in particular that I remember was on 12/12/15, extactly 15 years to the day after he helped install bushthief. I was at home with a bad cold and I was channel surfing and just happened to stumble on to the program. Watching Nader spew his garbage only made me feel sicker.

(1,051 posts)Nader's ego is as big as the orange turds. Nader knew exactly what he was doing in 2000 and he didn't care that he helped put bushthief in the White House. Nader was a terrible hypocrite. He had financial investments in many of the big corporations he claimed to hate and he gladly took the $5 million from the republican leadership council, a subsidiary of the RNC for his tv ad campaign that ran in crucial battleground states like Florida and spread his big lie that there were no differences between Al Gore and bushthief. I'll loathe Nader for all eternity for what he's done to our country. He still refuses to take responsibility for his actions in 2000. It's our country that's paying the terrible price for what Nader did in 2000. Jill Stein followed in his footsteps in 2016 and I fear that she may do so again in 2024.
