In California, first-degree murder involves a willful, deliberate, and premeditated killing, or a killing during an inherently dangerous felony (like robbery, rape, arson) under the felony-murder rule, or specific methods like lying in wait, torture, or using explosives. Convictions carry severe penalties, including 25 years to life, life without parole, or the death penalty if "special circumstances" (e.g., murder during another felony, hate crime) apply

It seems weird that they didn't have a chance to call 911 or do anything to defend themselves. If they were awake when the son attacked, I'm sure one would have done something to try to stop him. I guess the details will come out soon enough.

And the crime scene.

The crime scene blood will tell us where the crime occurred. In the bedroom or elsewhere.
There will have been a lot of blood.
On the killer too.

And the defensive wounds will tell us if the couple put up a fight or not.
If they tried to protect themselves there will be knife wounds on the arms and face.

If no defensive wounds then your theory is probably correct.

The wife was still alive when the police arrived and died on the way to the hospital.
So perhaps Rob tried to protect her.
IDK
