Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Trump tanking the Kennedy Center in multiple ways.
Trump's takeover of the Kennedy Center is going about as well as his drive to brand himself as the president of peace. So Trump added his name to the Kennedy Center, a move that experts have widely said that neither he nor the board that voted to do it have the power to do. While there are tons of quotes out there getting into the details and some that are certainly more entertaining. Ray Smock, who is a former House historian, said it pretty plainly, "The Kennedy Center was named by law. To change the name would require a revision of that 1964 law. The Kennedy Center board is not a lawmaking entity. Congress makes laws.
That's pretty plain. Legally speaking, his name being on the building doesn't appear to be too different than Kilroy was here being spray-painted on the building. But that doesn't mean his graffiti is without effect. The annual Christmas Eve jazz concert was cancelled after Chuck Redd pulled out. He said, quote, "I did choose to cancel our Kennedy Center Christmas Eve jazz jam when I saw the name change happening last Friday."
Kristy Lee, who is a Mobile area singer songwriter, pulled out of her concert scheduled for January 14th, saying, "I don't have much power, and I don't run with the big dogs who do. I'm just a folk singer from Alabama, slinging songs for a living." She added, "I believe in the power of truth and I believe in the power of people, and I'm going to stand on that side forever. I won't lie to you--cancelling shows hurts. This is how I keep the lights on, but losing my integrity would cost me more than any paycheck.
To add to his problems, Trump is of course being sued over the name change. Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio has reportedly filed suit. Undoubtedly, Trump will just write all of this off as people who just don't like him, but there was another development and it will hit Trump in a way that most things won't. His love of crowd sizes and ratings.
Trump hosted the Kennedy Center Honors. He did so after posting to social media, "At the request of the board and just about everybody else in America, I am hosting the event. Tell me what you think of my master of ceremony abilities.
So what happened after big men, strong men with tears in their eyes asked him to host? It was the lowest rated Kennedy Center honors. That's the end of the sentence. It appears to be the lowest rated year ever, attracting an average of just 2.65 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen data. For context, last year it averaged more than 4 million viewers. It was about a 35% drop. It's also worth noting that CBS didn't call it the Trump Kennedy Center Honors, just the Kennedy Center Honors. On top of all of that, Steven Colberts show, which Trump has mocked for low ratings, beat Trump's performance. I am sure that won't get under his skin at all, and this is definitely the last we'll hear about it.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
