For Labor Day: The Autobiography of Mother Jones by Mary Harris Jones - Audiobook

The Autobiography of Mother Jones by Mary Harris Jones - Audiobook

Mother Jones (Mary Harris Jones) was a legendary labor organizer. She was a founding member of the International Workers of the World (the IWW, or the Wobblies), and was active in the United Mine Workers and the Socialist Party of America. (Summary by Denny)

This is the full audiobook and is a newer YouTube version than what I have posted in the past in that it also includes the closed-caption option for those on DU who are hearing-impaired.

I have posted some version of this every Labor Day for a bunch of years since I stumbled upon this and took a couple days to listen to the story of this remarkable woman. She had a strong presence here in Philly (in what is now the Kensington neighborhood of the city) where she lead what has been dubbed the "March of the Mil Children", right to Teddy Roosevelt's summer home in NY.

She later "rode shotgun" to organize and protest for the rights of miners in WV and CO.

Mother Jones, Joe Hill (“Don’t waste time mourning, organize!”), the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, the Matewan Massacre are a few that should not be forgotten.

She committed her worldly life to the spiritual work that scripture requires of believers, to literally work above all else in the world, to care for the poor, the widows, and the orphans. Not to give them thoughts and prayers.

Thank you. I love this stuff.

She spent almost 3 months in custody in WV (in a boarding house/prison) when she was in her 80s, for trying to battle the "company" mining town there.

Yep, 'the most dangerous woman in America' was imprisoned, like Paul the Apostle, for doing justice and solidarity work. Mammon is the root of all evil.

She reminds me of my son who's a town councilman in Silver City, NM (and co-chair of his county's Democratic Party) which was founded as a company mining town. He's still battling Big Money's company town mentality that attempts to drive out the poor and homeless. Such work gets him in occasional trouble with hedge funded carpetbaggers, so it's a good thing he's got the mayor on his side.
