one thing that got me was after he asked if they thought he'd been unfair. Sure, they silently let his unfairness stand, but then he gave their core reason for not standing up for her. He was likely right, but if he'd actually asked them why they didn't protest, he might have heard how each person had a different reason, and a discussion might have ensued...about...?
