Switzerland forward Breel Embolo was sent off in the second half of its World Cup quarterfinal loss to Argentina on Saturday night, a controversial decision following a video review that is certain to fuel those who believe referees have been biased toward the reigning champion throughout the tournament.
Dan Ndoye had just tied the game at 1-all in the 67th minute when Argentina’s Leandro Paredes was shown a yellow card following a tackle on Embolo. But video showed that the Swiss player was falling before Paredes made contact with him, so Embolo was given a yellow card under the “mistaken identity” protocol that’s being used at the World Cup.
Embolo also had received a yellow card earlier in the match, so he was sent off and the Swiss were left to play with 10 men the rest of the way.
Switzerland managed to get the game to extra time, and was trying to survive to a shootout. But then Julián Alvarez scored from long range in the 112th minute, and Lautaro Martínez added another goal a few minutes later, sending Argentina to a 3-1 victory.
“We were punished because of a rule that in my opinion is completely unacceptable,” Swiss coach Murat Yakin said. “It’s very painful that we were eliminated that way. I don’t think we deserve that today, and in my opinion, my boys are the real heroes. They put all their heart and their passion into their performance. I am very proud. They are very proud.”

The incumbent and GOP allies accused the same-named challenger in the Aug. 18 primary of being a sham candidate working with Democrats to sow confusion and help Peltola. Dan. J. Sullivan and the Peltola campaign have denied that claim.
A top state elections official booted Dan J. Sullivan from the ballot. The Alaska Supreme Court later ordered that he be included.
Petersburg, where the challenger has lived for decades, is an island community of about 3,000 people in southeast Alaska that is accessible only by air or water. Many longtime residents find it hard to believe claims that their Dan Sullivan, a retired elementary and middle school teacher, is a dirty trickster.
“You really have to do a lot of mental gymnastics to suddenly not respect Dan Sullivan, because he’s honestly a very stand-up human being,” said Orin Pierson, publisher of the Petersburg Pilot newspaper.

New York Times reporters are subpoenaed after Air Force One reporting, newspaper says
The Trump administration has subpoenaed several New York Times journalists after their report on security concerns involving the new Air Force One, according to the paper.
The new jet, which President Donald Trump received as a gift from Qatar, entered service last week.
The subpoenas issued Friday seek to force the reporters to testify before a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Wednesday, the paper said, adding that federal agents delivered some subpoenas to the reporters at their homes.
There was no immediate response from the White House or Department of Justice to requests for comment on Saturday.
“The appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects,” David McCraw, a lawyer for the Times, said in a statemen

US star Christian Pulisic fractured leg in World Cup loss to Belgium
U.S. star Christian Pulisic fractured his right leg during the Americans’ World Cup loss to Belgium and will be sidelined for several weeks.
Pulisic has a bone bruise and a microfracture of his tibia and fibula, the U.S. Soccer Federation said Thursday. The diagnosis was made after an X-ray and MRI on Tuesday.
He would not have been able to play during the remainder of the tournament had the U.S. advanced.
Pulisic is expected to resume training before AC Milan’s Serie A opener at Torino on Aug. 23.
Pulisic hit a leg of Belgium captain Youri Tielemans while attempting a shot in the 52nd minute of Monday’s 4-1 round-of-16 loss at Seattle. He remained in the game but was hobbling and Sebastian Berhalter replaced him in the 59th minute.

During Norway’s victory over Brazil on Sunday there was little between the fast feet of Vinícius Júnior and the raw power of Erling Haaland. But look at how that pair and others on the two teams were raised and a different story emerges. Neymar, Matheus Cunha and Vinícius grew up in a system that prioritises prodigies – spotting talent early and fast‑tracking it through academies built around a single sport. Haaland, Martin Ødegaard and Antonio Nusa grew up with something altogether different.
That is because in 2007 the Norges idrettsforbund (NIF), Norway’s governing body for sport, revised the eight “rights” it had first adopted in 1987 to protect the participation, safety and joy of every child playing sport. The rules are mandatory for every coach and club registered with the NIF, and they read like heresy to those embedded in the talent-funnel culture found almost everywhere else in world sport.
Under the age of nine, children play only local club matches. There are no results lists, no league tables and no trophies. Regional competition opens at age 11, though scores and rankings stay off limits. Only at 13 can a Norwegian athlete take part in anything resembling a national championship.
Of the eight rights, two buck the trend of the sporting tiger parent culture: mastery and freedom to choose – the idea that a child has a right to try multiple sports rather than being funnelled into a single discipline before they are old enough to have chosen it themselves. For the gifted youngsters, there is the benefit of bringing the skills of each into whichever one they settle on.

EMS performed CPR at Mitch McConnell's home same day he was hospitalized: Dispatch audio
Emergency responders were called to Sen. Mitch McConnell's Washington, D.C. address for a report of a person unconscious on the same morning that the Republican former Senate Majority Leader was taken to the hospital, publicly available audio from D.C. Fire and EMS dispatch confirms.
"CPR in progress," a D.C. Fire and EMS paramedic said over the radio before 9 a.m. on June 14, just six minutes after the initial call came from McConnell's home near the U.S. Capitol about an "unconscious" person.
One minute later, a dispatcher said paramedics were dealing with a "cardiac arrest." The senator's name was not mentioned during the radio calls, and whether EMS was referring to the 84-year-old McConnell in the dispatch has not been confirmed.
On the same day as the radio dispatches, McConnell spokesperson David Popp told news outlets that the Republican former Majority Leader was admitted to the hospital and was "receiving excellent care." A day later, his spokesperson said McConnell remained "fully engaged with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters." Popp did not reveal the reason for McConnell's hospitalization.

'Weaponizing ignorance': Muslims bear brunt as Texas Republicans make hate mainstream
Following a brutal Republican primary runoff in which Islamophobia took center stage, anti-Muslim hatred continues spilling into public life in Texas.
Texans say that the hate speech shared by elected officials is increasingly echoed by people in their everyday interactions, including discussions about education or interactions at a store, in a park, at university and at elementary school. In one case, students at the University of Houston were praying when a man approached them and burned a Qur’an. In other cases, people have been verbally attacked for wearing traditional garments.
“It definitely trickles down,” said Naila Syed, a Dallas resident and member of the Islamic Center of North America Council for Social Justice. Syed says her two young daughters have been confronted with anti-Islam “talking points” while at school. A fellow student asked them if they knew that followers of Islam treated women poorly. “To have a kid who has these points ready and memorized like this is just very concerning as a parent,” Syed said.
Multiple people said the hatred had made them uncomfortable venturing outside their own home by themselves. Others requested the use of a pseudonym because they had already been the subject of threats and online harassment. Recently, Muslim attenders at the official Texas GOP convention – including some delegates – were told to convert to Christianity or leave the country. About the same time, a woman was filmed verbally accosting two Muslim women in a grocery store.
“Islam is a terrorist organization, not a religion,” the woman said. “This is not a Muslim country; this is a Christian country.”
A fundraiser for the woman who made the comments has raised nearly $145,000 as of this writing and drawn support from the Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace. Mace and other lawmakers, including Brandon Gill, also a Republican, have repeatedly cast Europe as a cautionary tale for what happens when people from Muslim-majority countries are allowed to immigrate elsewhere.

Israeli forces arrest Palestinian 'doctor of the poor'
Israeli forces on Sunday arrested a prominent 71-year-old Palestinian physician known as the “doctor of the poor” in a pre-dawn raid on his home in the occupied West Bank, prompting widespread condemnation.
Dr Mazen Al-Rantisi, a physician widely known for providing care to low-income Palestinians, was arrested before dawn at his home in the al-Tira neighbourhood of Ramallah.
He was later taken to the police station in the Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim, where he is believed to be under interrogation by the Special Investigations Unit. Israeli authorities have not said why he was detained or where he is currently being held.
According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the arrest is believed to be connected to Al-Rantisi’s position as chair of the Union of Health Work Committees, a Palestinian non-profit founded in 1985 that operates clinics serving thousands of patients each year, particularly in rural communities with limited access to healthcare.
The organisation was declared an “unlawful association” by the Israeli military in 2020 under emergency regulations dating back to the British Mandate for Palestine. Two years later, Israeli forces shut its headquarters in Al-Bireh. Despite those measures, the group remains legally registered with the Palestinian Authority’s interior ministry.

Mona Khalil, sea turtle conservationist, killed in Israeli strike in Lebanon
When war arrived again in Lebanon, Mona Khalil refused to abandon her beloved beachfront home or the endangered sea turtles she had dedicated her life to protecting.
During the last conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in 2024, the environmental activist reluctantly fled her property in the southern Lebanese village of Al-Mansouri, which doubles as a marine conservation area, and took refuge in Beirut.
Her friends say she resented every second of being driven from her home. So when war began anew in March, Khalil stayed put.
She died on Friday from wounds sustained in an Israeli strike on her home earlier this month. She was 76.
"She chose her own destiny," Assad Serhal, Khalil's friend and fellow conservationist, told As It Happens host Nil Köksal. "She wanted to die there, and she did."
On June 4, an Israeli strike hit Khalil's house. Her assistant, an Ethiopian woman, is recovering from burns, according to the Guardian. But Khalil succumbed to her wounds in a Beirut hospital.
