US poised to see dramatic drop in homicides for 3rd straight year More than 5,000 fewer homicides recorded in 2024
https://abcnews.go.com/US/united-states-drop-homicides-2024/story?id=116902123
Homicides across the United States are poised to plummet for the third straight year as 2024 winds down, driving the nation's annual murder toll down to levels not seen since before the pandemic, according to preliminary data from cities both large and small.
Based on available crime statistics from U.S. law enforcement agencies, the year is expected to end with a nearly 16% drop in homicides nationwide and a 3.3% decline in overall violent crime, Jeff Asher, a national crime analyst, told ABC News.
The dramatic drop in homicides surpasses a 13% decline in 2023, then the largest decrease on record until now. In 2022, the number of murders across the country fell 6%, according to the FBI.

Reagan FBI director urges caution against Gabbard
William Webster was director of the FBI and the CIA under two presidents.
The only man to lead both the FBI and the CIA urged caution to senators who might vote to confirm former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence and Kash Patel to lead the FBI, according to a letter sent to senators this week.
"I am deeply concerned about the potential nominations of Mr. Kash Patel to lead the FBI and the inclusion of Former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as DNI in intelligence roles," William Webster, who led the FBI during the Carter and Reagan administrations and the CIA after that, said in a letter to senators on Thursday.

7 Times Tulsi Gabbard Went To Bat In Congress For Now-Deposed Syrian Dictator Bashar Assad

Assad was known for being a particularly brutal and corrupt dictator, even by Middle East standards. In 2013, his forces were accused of using sarin gas in an attack killing 1,400 people and of using barrel bombs explosives that can be made from empty barrels and other scrap, along with gasoline and shrapnel against civilians. His governments expertise in torture led the U.S. to outsource interrogations of some terrorism suspects there during President George W. Bushs global war on terror.

**A FEW OF THE WAYS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY SABOTAGED OBAMACARE -TRUMP AND CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS HAVE SPENT YEARS WORKING TO UNDERMINE THE ACA AND HAVE MADE IT EASIER T BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY**
1. the ACAs Consumer Operated and Oriented Plans, or CO-OPs. Early drafts of the ACA called for $10 billion in federal grants for the CO-OP program. But insurance lobbyists and conservative lawmakers insisted on $6 billion in loans instead of $10 billion in grants, restrictions limiting CO-OPs to the individual and small-group market (and not the more stable and profitable large-group market)
2. Day One legal challenges--On March 23, 2010, the same day the ACA was signed into law, Republican attorneys general from 14 states began the process of challenging the ACAs individual mandate via the courts
3. Refusal to take the ACAs Medicaid expansion funding--The ACA scheduled Medicaid expansion to take effect at the beginning of 2014. But at that point, half the states had opted against expansion, despite the fact that the federal government paid the full cost of expansion for the first 3 years
4. Obstruction of enrollment efforts---January 2014, laws had been passed in 17 Republican states that restricted navigators ability to help residents understand and enroll in the new plans.
5. Republican Efforts to invalidate premium subsidies--coverage would not be considered affordable without the premium subsidies
6. Republicans Undermined ACAs risk corridors in late 2014, Republican lawmakers, led by Senator Marco Rubio, added language to a must-pass budget bill (Cromnibus) that retroactively made the risk corridors program budget neutral. Coop insurers were driven out of the market place
7. Republicans efforts to repeal the ACA in 2017 (with a successful repeal of the individual mandate penalty)
8. Republican party refusal to work on bipartisan fixes
9. **Top Republican Brags About His Partys Sabotage Of Obamacare**--Well, its 2017, and the second most powerful Republican in the U.S. Senate just crowed about how he and his colleagues have wrecked part of the Affordable Care Act, undermining a program that helps millions to get insurance. **Republicans**
1. Republicans have voted at least 70 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act and the protections it guarantees for people with pre-existing medical conditions--Republicans hoped voters would forget they tried to kill Obamacare
2. Republicans in the House and Senate have just recently proposed hundreds of billions of cuts to the Medicare and Medicaid programs
3. Trump tried to throw millions of working-poor people off of Medicaid, then, once that failed, deliberately engineered a spike in health-insurance premiums, out of sheer spite.
4. Trump Proposed a rule allowing companies with less than 250 workers to cease reporting workplace injuries and illness statistics to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and removed a list of Americans killed in workplace accidents from OSHAs home page.
5. The Trump administration issued a rule last year that allowed short-term plans to last 364 days and to be renewable for three years. These plans DO NOT COVER PRE-EXISTING CONDTIONS AND IN A NUTSHELL ARE THE SAME PLANS FROM 11-12 YEARS AGO--OBAMA LIMITED AMERICAN'S EXPOSURE TO THESE FRAUDLENT POLICIES-- THESE POLICIES OFTEN REFUSED COVERAGE AND HELPED SEND MILLIONS INTO BANKRUPTCY--**A SCAM AT BEST**
6. The republican party slashed Funds to facilitate HealthCare.gov sign-ups--in a nutshell, they are no longer letting the public know the time period open enrollment for heatlhcare sidning up--it just ended 13 days ago, in case anyone didnt know that
7. Trump appointed one Supreme Court justice who had ruled that a trucker could be justly fired for abandoning his broken-down vehicle, instead of honoring his contractual obligation to freeze to death with his cargo, and nominated another whod found that San Diego SeaWorld could not be held liable in the death of an employee who was killed by a killer whale. (The former pick ended up producing a landmark decision that gutted funding for public-sector unions, in defiance of decades-old precedent.)

Republicans Quietly Axed IRS Funding Amid Government Shutdown Chaos
Republicans Quietly Axed IRS Funding Amid Government Shutdown Chaos
As Congress fought over the spending bill, Republicans snuck in a passage to gut funding for the IRS. And Democrats didnt catch it.
Specifically, the White House said, the IRS will conduct 400 fewer major business audits each year, and 1,200 fewer audits of rich individuals. Customer services for taxpayers will also be hurt, according to Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo. Last month, he warned that by 2026, the IRS will only have the resources to answer two of every 10 phone calls to its helplines, with wait times increasing to an average of 28 minutes.
The Inflation Reduction Acts boost to the tax agency helped relieve a long backlog of tax filings, and created a well-liked free tax filing pilot program. All of that is on the chopping block now, fitting in with Donald Trump and Republicans plans to weaken the IRS. The president-elect plans to appoint anti-tax extremist Billy Long to take over the agency next year, who repeatedly tried to abolish the IRS as a member of Congress.
These cuts combined with Longs planned appointment mean that tax season next year will almost certainly result in headaches for the average taxpayer and windfalls for the wealthy and powerful. A ballooning national debt is also on the horizon. The question is whether Trump and the GOP will be able to get away with all of it.

'It never left': GOP senator mocked for claiming Trump has brought Christmas 'back in America'
Source: yahoo
GOP senator Tommy Tuberville has been mocked for claiming that Donald Trump has brought Christmas back in America.
The Trump loyalist posted the festive message on social media platform X on Christmas Eve.
Thanks to President Trump, Christmas is back in America, Tuberville said. But the former football coach was widely mocked in the responses.
When idiots say stupid things, Democratic Party strategist Chris D. Jackson responded.
Someone has been [at] the eggnog, one person jibed.
Christmas is about Christ, but somehow MAGA wants to make it about their god Trump. Sickening, another person said.
How did Christmas ever leave America, & how did Trump bring it back? someone else asked. Im 76 Ive celebrated Christmas every year of my life. Good ones. Bad ones and no one told me how to do it or if I could. Stop with this garbage, another replied.
People were quick to confirm that they have, indeed, celebrated Christmas during the period when Trump was not president.
It never left, moron, someone said.

US agency focused on foreign disinformation shuts down
Source: france24
The Global Engagement Center, a State Department unit established in 2016, shuttered on Monday at a time when officials and experts tracking propaganda have been warning of the risk of disinformation campaigns from US adversaries such as Russia and China.
"The State Department has consulted with Congress regarding next steps," it said in a statement when asked what would happen to the GEC's staff and its ongoing projects following the shutdown.
The GEC had an annual budget of $61 million and a staff of around 120. Its closing leaves the State Department without a dedicated office for tracking and countering disinformation from US rivals for the first time in eight years.
A measure to extend funding for the center was stripped out of the final version of the bipartisan federal spending bill that passed through the US Congress last week.

FAFO - Trump's pro-Israel Cabinet Picks Upset Muslims Who Voted for Him
U.S. Muslim leaders who supported Republican Donald Trump to protest against the Biden administration's support for Israel's war on Gaza and attacks on Lebanon have been deeply disappointed by his cabinet picks, they tell Reuters.
"Trump won because of us and we're not happy with his secretary of state pick and others," said Rabiul Chowdhury, a Philadelphia investor who chaired the Abandon Harris campaign in Pennsylvania and co-founded Muslims for Trump.Muslim support for Trump helped him win Michigan and may have factored into other swing state wins, strategists believe.
Trump picked Republican senator Marco Rubio, a staunch supporter of Israel for Secretary of State.
Earlier this year, Rubio said he would not call, opens new for a ceasefire in Gaza, and that he believed Israel should destroy "every element" of Hamas. "These people are vicious animals," he added.

We're Already Seeing Signs That Trump Is Tanking the Economy
Source: newrepublic
National Association of Manufacturers, whose president, Jay Timmons, praised Trump in 2017 as a true champion for our industry, forecast in a postelection survey that in 2025 capital investment would grow only 1.6 percent. Thats not particularly robust, Timmons told Bloombergs Mark Niquette. In a December forecast, another manufacturing trade group, the Institute for Supply Management, predicted a more robust increase of 5.2 percent. But thats compared to an increase of 5.6 percent this calendar yearwhen, Niquette pointed out, high interest rates inhibited investment.
Vanguard is an investment management firm and therefore part of the rich-people ecosystem, not the economy. But in addition to forecasting market trends it forecasts bona fide economic trends, and late last month it said gross domestic product growth, which has been 3 percent or higher under the supposedly ruinous economic policies of President Joe Biden, will fall to 2.7 percent next year under Trump. And thats assuming Trump is mostly blowing smoke about tariffs and a mass roundup of immigrants. If he isnt blowing smoke, says Vanguard, then GDP growth will be more like 2 percent.

Bidenomics Was Wildly Successful The president's domestic record wasn't just extraordinary.
Source: newrepublic
No one can yet say for sure why such a strong economy led to a definitive loss for the sitting administration. But however voters felt about President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris's management of inflation--or immigration, or crime, or anything else--the fact remains that the administration oversaw an incredible economic recovery and then kept it going. None of that would have been possible without the Biden administration's embrace of novel economic policy, now known as "Bidenomics."
By nearly every metric, Bidenomics was a roaring success. It would be a mistake to ignore or forget the lessons that can be gleaned from the administration's robust economic policy. Their present discontent notwithstanding, Americans will undoubtedly miss this economy when it's gone.

Trump will be first president since WWII to lose jobs during tenure. The U.S. lost 140,000 jobs in December 2020 in the final jobs report of Trump's presidency. This means the nation has about 3 million fewer jobs than it did 4 years ago UNDER THE BLACK GUY --OBAMA, meaning Trump will be the first president to lose jobs over his term since employment data was collected in this way. NBC News Now correspondent Simone Boyce explains how it all unfolded.

DEBT AND DEFICIT
Trump Built a National Debt So Big (Even Before the Pandemic) That It'll Weigh Down the Economy for Years The "King of Debt" promised to reduce the national debt -- then his tax cuts made it surge. Add in the pandemic, and he oversaw the third-biggest deficit increase of any president. https://www.propublica.org/article/national-debt-trump
The national debt has risen by almost $7.8 trillion during Trump's time in office
TRUMP HAD THE THIRD-BIGGEST PRIMARY DEFICIT GROWTH, 5.2% OF GDP, BEHIND ONLY GEORGE W. BUSH (11.7%) AND ABRAHAM LINCOLN (9.4%).--All Republicans
Republican tax cuts are the driving force behind the country's worsening fiscal outlook.
If not for the Bush tax cuts and their extensions -- as well as the Trump tax cuts -- revenues would be on track to keep pace with spending indefinitely, Instead, these tax cuts have added $10 trillion to the debt since their enactment and are responsible for 57 percent of the increase in the debt ratio since 2001

The Walmart Effect - New research suggests that the company makes the communities it operates in poorer
In the 1990s and early 2000s, before tech giants came to dominate the discourse about corporate power, Walmart was a hot political topic. Documentaries and books proliferated with such titles as Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price and How Walmart Is Destroying America (And the World). The publicity got so bad that Walmart created a war room in 2005 dedicated to improving its image.....................They calculate that poverty increases by about 8 percent in places where a Walmart opens relative to places without one even when factoring in the most optimistic cost-savings scenarios.

A Quick Reminder on the Trump Organization's Tax Evasion in Panama
Trumps new threat against Panama should come with a reminder about how his family organization operated in the country.
Every analysis of this new Trump threat should come with a reminder: In 2019, the owners of a Panama City hotel tower that was previously managed and operated under the Trump brand, accused Trump Panama Hotel Management LLC and Trump International Hotels Management LLC, of not paying the required 12.5 percent taxes to the Panamanian government. Instead, the lawsuit alleges, the companies simply kept the money, intentionally evading taxes and leaving the new owner liable for millions.
A tax audit of the hotels submitted as evidence found massive inconsistencies. The case is still pending in New York District
Court.
