Perhaps the most interesting of the candidates is a man who actually changed his name to Santa Claus and is a dead ringer for the jolly gift-giver rumored to live at the true North Pole, not just the town named after it. Regardless, he’s running on a progressive agenda as a Democratic Socialist and those who prefer that kind of thing now desperately want him to win.

Part of the reason that so many people, including Mr. Claus, are running for this one election is because area Alaskans voted in a ranked choice voting system that starts with a non-partisan primary in which the top four candidates move on to the final election. Advocates for a strong democracy in the U.S. have been pushing for the rest of the nation to switch to the ranked choice system, which gives people more room to vote for third-party options without worry that their vote will be “wasted.”
