Roland is a man in his late sixties. At supper a few months ago, he said quietly and sadly that he had admired Americans all his life and believed that we were just a little bit better at heart than people elsewhere in the world, but that core belief of his had been shattered by MAGA.

To me, that is the most poignant and shameful thing about our national experience over these past seven years: the knowledge that we have disillusioned millions like Roland, all over the world, who had admired our people and our nation. We have shamefully abdicated our position of world leadership.
