Otherwise, there's no mechanism in the party rules for the presidential nominee to kick the vp nominee off of the ticket.

No, there's no legal mechanism for doing this. People saying "YES" are misinformed on how nominations work

The problem is getting a replacement and then getting that information to all of the states in a timely manner.
