I think it's important to be sure we're reporting the facts accurately, even though it's a moot point, in a way. What Thurman experienced was medically indistinguishable from an incomplete miscarriage. In both cases, the pregnancy is, to all intents and purposes, over, but the woman's uterus has failed to fully discharge its contents. And as you know, the treatment needed is the same: a d&c to finish an irreversible process that has already begun.

Unfortunately, these days it's almost impossible for woman to receive this treatment in a state where abortion has been banned and criminalized, until and unless she is literally at death's door. Doctors have to walk a tightrope trying to determine how bad things have to get before they can perform a d&c without going to prison for literally saving a woman's life. (!)

It's a very difficult needle to thread, and sometimes, as in Amber Thurman's case, the results are tragic.
