7. This Salon article seems to largely miss the mark, IMO.

There's a much darker explanation that rings true to me.

Veterans For Responsible Leadership
@VetsForRL
*TRUMP DOESN'T WANT TO WIN THE ELECTION*

Trump is going to:

Coachella in LA County, California (Oct 12)
Madison Square Garden in New York (Oct 27)

The election? November 5

None of it makes sense, until you think about it the way he does.

Thread 🧵1/13

New York & California are massively blue states.

Trump lost both states by 23+ percentage points in 2020.

No poll of *any* repute has him close in either state this year.

He will lose both states in 2024.

Why is he going, especially with other states so close?

2/13

The Trump campaign told
@NBCNews
that the Madison Square Garden event is a rally to "kickoff an arena tour ... of battleground states." https://msn.com/en-us/news/politics/donald-trump-to-hold-october-campaign-rally-at-madison-square-garden-kicking-off-arena-tour/ar-AA1rXOyB

His staff is obviously lying.

New York & California are not battlegrounds.

3/13
You'll see media claiming because he wants to engage latinos, or that he owes California, or because he's lazy, or that his ego wants to play big arenas.

The media isn't thinking about it correctly and, unfortunately, continues to treat his campaign as normal and honest.

4/13

So what is really going on?

While these states are proportionally very blue, in terms of raw numbers:

California has the greatest number of registered Republican voters (5.25M) in the U.S.

New York is fourth (2.84M).

To talk to a lot of Republicans, this is where to go.

4/13
(Yes, it has two posts numbered 4/13.)
These people can't vote in other states, so he's not there trying to win their vote.

He's trying to rile them up. To make them angry.

And there's a history here that most people might not appreciate.

5/13
The MAGA movement was born in California, as GOP radicals became increasingly extreme in their relative isolation.

A few MAGAs leaders from California:
Stephen Miller
Tucker Carlson
Steve Bannon
Andrew Breitbart

It's also where fervency can be found in the rank & file...

6/13
... as the
@ADL
published a report *last year* about the rising levels of extremism in California.

Report here: https://adl.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/2023-05/HATE%20IN%20THE%20GOLDEN%20STATE%20FINAL.pdf

Trump wants to give the extremists a reason to fight.
Not with ballots, but with fists.

7/13

What about New York?

The other side of the MAGA leadership, when you include "blue" New Jersey (1.52M GOP) & Connecticut (497k GOP).

MAGA leaders from the area:
Donald Trump
Rudy Giuliani
Kellyanne Conway

We all know what happens when you fire up ideologues...

Jan 6th

We know Trump encourages political violence.

Evidence provided by the special prosecutor for the Jan 6th trial showed that Trump knew about and encouraged violence.

He is running, in part, to avoid the consequence of this crime.

He will be violent again to avoid jail.

9/13

We've been standing the watch, along with our allies in
@commondefense
.

We presented to the
@NCGOP
at their convention & led by Lara Trump, that they must uphold the will of the voters and renounce political violence.

We were thrown out.

On this Memorial Day Weekend,
@VetsForRL
&
@commondefense
went to the
@NCGOP
Convention to secure a pledge from its leaders &
@realDonaldTrump
to "renounce violence and implicit threats of violence" during the 2024 campaign.

Here’s what happened:

You can see the pledge we were asking them to sign here.

95% of American veterans support it in polling.

It's something every American can and must get behind.

But Trump?....

11/13

...he is not focusing his efforts on swing states because he knows he can't win the ethical or legal way.

And we haven't held him responsible for the crimes he commits in public.

Demand of your elected leaders, regardless of party, that they renounce political violence.

12/13
And get ready for what we all know he'll do.

Vote so hard that your will cannot be ignored.

And be ready to protest - non-violently - when he does what he's done before and will do again.

13/13 END

I read this and it is in line with Roger Stone's call for "armed guards" at the polls, and with the psy-op work of Mike Flynn and his crew.
