In reply to the discussion: Another consideration if Trump gives Ukraine to Putin: [View all]Irish_Dem
(59,477 posts)18. I am a US military kid who lived in a US occupied country as a child.
And many of my friends had lived in another US occupied country after WWII.
(Japan and Germany.)
People have no idea the infrastructure required for this kind of situation.
And what it is like on a day to day basis.
And yes this does not take into account the added layer of the horrendous war crimes Russian has committed.
Putin's goal was geopolitical and about power.
He wants control of Europe.
Xi wants control of the Pacific.
Their goal is to be the 21st century superpowers.
First they must get regional control.
Putin takes Ukraine and threatens the rest of Europe.
Xi takes Taiwan and threatens the rest of the Pacific.
It is about raw power and shifting the global power structure.

Same here. Taking Ukraine would be the easy part for Putin. Holding and controlling it would be the challenge.

Holding and controlling a very hostile county takes a lot of troops and money.

That's certainly borne out by the current rhetoric from Kremlin-sponsored mouthpieces on Russia's media

They want the LAND. That area is full of natural resources. The towns are destroyed.

Yes rigid control takes a lot of ground troops. And 250,000 brutal police and Stasi.

Well, Trump told EU representatives yesterday that he has no intention of abandoning Ukraine

I think there could be some mental masturbation going on between Trump and Putin right now.

Thats it! The WORST thing Putin can do is gloat. Trump will treat him like Pence.
