All I think is Jean Valjean stealing bread to feed his family from Les Miserables and having that chase him his entire life. We are better than that.
Sorry you believe in eternal punishment that only increases recidivism and I'm sorry the CORRECTIONS part of CORRECTIONS and REHABILITATION has been prioritized over REHABILITATION, but, being a teacher for 20 years, I've seen the beginning of the school to prison pipeline and worked my ass off to stop it.
Principals and teachers start the trek down that road by developing reputations for child and we continue into adult life.
Once the sentence is up, the felon is square with the house no matter what the crime was. And I truly believe one in every two people in prison actually belong there to begin with since our justice system is more about getting convictions and prison sentences than it is about finding the truth and helping society and people heal.
If someone serves 25 to life and gets out after 25, the felon is square and did their time. Fresh, clean slate unless they do it again.
