Deep in a forested canyon on a dry Labor Day weekend, a kid threw smoke bombs for a thrill. The fire burned down miles of the most beautiful landscape in the country. 140 hikers had to walk ten miles to safety with the fire at their backs.

Someone was a witness, and the kid was sued by the forest service for damages....$37 Million. Pretty large debt for a high school student.

The scars remain. Thousands of standing dead Douglas Fir snags are providing habitats. Hiking my favorite trails will not be the same in my lifetime.
