kicked in the guts when the current situation affects them in practical ways.

Some mental activity may be detected when they discover prices are on the up and up.
Becoming uncomfortable is a great brain stimulant.
The question 'why is it so?' will bounce inside their heads, and some conclusions may be forthcoming.

How did a large part of the American population get to be like this?
Drugs?
Something in the water?
The education system?
The pervasive propaganda media that tells them to just consume, and not think?
