(29,532 posts)He won the popular vote in the first 3 states but Biden won South Carolina which was a 3-way race with Steyer but Biden attacked him over his investments in private prisons which helped him win the state and when the party saw he had the best chance of beating Bernie the rest of the party coalesced behind Biden by Super Tuesday. Sanders still won states like California and Colorado on Super Tuesday but I always felt like winning a primary was more difficult than winning a general election because primary voters care about winning rather than policy. In 2020 the exit polls in the first 4 states showed that medicare for all was winning the primary but people preferred Biden because he felt like he had the best chance of beating Trump so I do agree winning the primary is the bigger obstacle.
