That safeguards not just kids, but adds a bit of time and effort in between an impulse and a tragedy.

The counter argument is about self defense from presumably armed intruders, but (a) that's far from my experience so I'm unable to advocate in favor of it; and (b) the likelihood of success seems not worth the risk, to me.

I can see a day when things are very different but that's a whole different conversation.
