For a number of year, maybe 20 or more, government worker levels have been stable (not sure if that is per capita or actual numbers).

Big spending from tRump 1.0 tax cuts and necessitated by Covid response has ballooned the debt. tRump 2.0 is on track to make it much worse and firing govt workers won't help much.
