(987 posts)...you have a problem in general election contests. I am only saying that part of that sentiment is driven by handing Republicans easy ways to deflect from their own corruption by making it look as if Democrats are just as corrupt. Some of that is on the Democrats that should know better than to open that door even a crack by doing things like putting classified documents in their garage...or having a private email server. Heck, Senator Menendez was just convicted of federal corruption charges--not a great look.
And no, I'm not missing anything about what is going on. I'm frustrated that for every issue that seems like a cut-and-dry case of Republican corruption there is almost always something that they can use to make Democrats look equally bad or at least bolster their case that Democrats are doing something corrupt in trying to hold them to account.
After World War II, both America and the Soviet Union had the opportunity to dominate the post-World War world. America came out on top by being better than the fascist regime it had just helped overthrow--becoming a beacon of democracy and freedom and trust--while the Soviet Union promised only fascism under a different banner. It means something to hold yourself to a higher standard regardless of what the other side does.
