... socialist. None of the commies and too few of the socialists had any fun and there darn few socialist comedians. So I went SDS, even while in the Navy. Came out harder core left. Did get the rest of my education. And really needed my VA benefits. and got to go to MM 'A' schools and submarine school.

I bounced good in the Navy: stood two watches and stood one inspection the whole time. In MM school, the barracks quartermaster had missed putting section threes on the duty roster. So I stood one duty, by the time they realized the section three SNAFU, I had married and was on a 13 section duty, one exposure to duty every 13 days. That was my single duty - sweeping for two hours and then cut loose by the Chief.

I stood one inspection and one duty - none after I became the the mustering and duty rostering petty officer at New London. I had left my Pea Coat on shore (my apt) and the stores did not have my size. I borrowed one from a fellow swabbie from Akron, Bill Fannon (just the best dude I knew inside). The Officer noticed my coat was a bit big, and ordered me take it off, thinking it would have another sailors name in it. I would have gotten a serious gig, if there had been someone else's name in it. I'd have been charged with theft from shipmates - a charge taken very seriously in the Navy. Fortunately, Fannon never put his name in it, and the stores did not have my size. So I was safe.
