While the woman he’s plopped down next to has already put her knees together so as not to crowd the other person, out of politeness. It’s a form of rude male entitlement and a kind of boasting.

Trump, the world’s most classless leader, does this everywhere, making sure his red necktie hangs over and accentuates his manly bits. Yes, men sit differently from women, but manspreading is a complete exaggeration.
