(669 posts)It's not the rank and file democrats or progressives I blame here. I think, in general, they were very much in favor of what was going on, and said so. To me, that's what makes this worse. You actually had a base that just got good news in the election, was getting fired up, and were starting to see a reason to vote for dems and not just against Trump. Voting against Trump is great and pretty much always the right thing to do, but having a base fired up to vote for you is much more important and likely to lead to better long-term results. This capitulation is exactly the kind of thing that throws cold water on that kind of base enthusiasm.
Unfortunately the republicans are getting scads of money constantly and enough dems are that they will never want to see anything done about it. But I also can't think of a better way to get Citizen's United on the chopping block than a fired up base. Nothing else is going to do it.
