(9,212 posts)I was in the USMC myself. I was taught in Officer Basic that NCO were the backbone of the Corps. It probably is the most obvious in the Air Force - anyone can grasp the importance of the planes staying in the air. But it's true for all. If all officers aren't told it in basic, they should be - some probably will still not grasp it, sadly.
When I was returning to the US after an overseas tour, I was collecting my records to take with me, and as I was leaving medical, I asked where dental was then, since it had moved. The Corpsman (if I recall correctly an E5) said, "It's in the back of this building. I'll show you." I said something to the effect that I thought I could find it from his information and that he must have more important things to do, to which he replied, "It's my pleasure, Ma'am. You have always treated us like human beings." When I said "Well, yes, that's what you are," he advised me that not everyone thought that. And I'm afraid he was correct.
