I grew up having my perceptions shaped by white-washed westerns and strong patriarchal models of the perfect families, communities, femininity, etc. How discombobulating it was to find these paradigms did not work when overlaid on real life. It is hard to dump ideas that have been firmly rooted by such strong early influence.
